UT vs Memphis: Upset in the making

On top of playing bad, there was also one of the worst missed calls I can ever remember on the kickoff that Memphis returned for a TD.

Gavol we had a center in that game, I can't think of his name, a kid from North Carolina, and the Memphis State noseguard killed him and was in the UT backfield on every play. Do you remember his name?

Why did you have to go and ask me a question like that? It's killing me trying to think of who that was.

You think our team is superior to our 1996 team? Is Memphis's that much inferior to their 96 team? I remember their QB was crippled and barely could hobble back to the huddle and we still got beat.
However, that year Memphis had a top five ranked defense. Not anywhere close this year. I also live in Memphis and went to the Chattanooga game because I had free tickets to take my grandson (night of the Air Force game) The Mocs aren't much better than a good high school team and they scored 14 points on the Tigers. Was also at the '96 game and cannot tolerate another outcome like that....

Wasn't Bill Duff was it that year?

I remember when the Vols were 12-0 versus Memphis and lost to them for the first time. Believe it was when Peyton was still there-if I'm not mistaken. Vols better be careful and not overlook them!

I looked it up it was Brent Gibson who relaced Jeff Smith the previous year"s center. I thought Smith was a great college lineman.

Where did you find that? I didn't really look very hard, but I had no success the one time I googled it.

If you look in the Tennessee Football Media guide (at least the year 2000 one) it lists the starting lineups for all of the prior seasons. A strol down memory lane.

Duff was a DT... and he'd smack you in the mouth for thinking he turned in such a crappy performance. What a great player. Don't mean to insult you at all. Just illustrating that he was pretty "onry".

I know. After I posted that I had to slap myself in the face for such a dumass post. It must've been because he was one of my favorite "onry" Vols because he wore my high school number,50, right?

After a 5-6 season, why does anyone think TN would be overlooking any team??? I think TN got a hugh (ha ha) dos of humble pie last year. Don't think they will overlook anyone this year. I think TN is capable of beating every team left on the schedule. I'm not saying they will, but I beleive they will be in every game, with a chance to win all of them. If the ball bounces TN's way, they could end up winning the East, because there is no way FL will survive this four game stretch unskathed.... AL, LSU, AUB, GA... I think FL loses at least two SEC games. If we upset GA in Athens, we could control our own destiny if FL loses a couple.

If Memphis has a mobile QB (I haven't seen them play) then that will cause defensive problems.

It's been exactly ten years since Memphis(State) beat UT and I was there for that unfortunate game and I plan to be there this year even though I have this bad feeling about us losing this year also.
You are nuts. You think a team that you haven't even seen play is going to pull an upset b/c it has been ten years since they beat us. Come on, get a grip.

I didn't say would but said could, especially with the game with UGA coming up. Obviously, you were still in diapers the last time they beat us or still think we have the Big Orange Machine of yesteryear that can beat instate rivals even on an off day.

I do not like Memphis, but do respect their HC, Tommy West, who has led them to a bowl the past three years, which we have failed to do!

I wasn't in diapers I was there and we had them beat baring a close call on the kick-off return that the player was down. They are worse off than last year and you haven't even seen them play so what judegement do you have of Memphis THIS year. We missed a bowl game one year and over the past ten years we have had an overall better program than the Tigers. They lost to a poor Ole Miss team and East Carolina. Give me a break.

Speaking of that call on the kickoff return. I can still see that play in my head just like it was last week and I have a question. It looked to me like the only part of the guy's anatomy to touch the ground other than his feet was his elbow. And after I watched the replay, I'm not sure it touched either. It looked like the guy defied gravity. My question: If the ball carrier's elbow touches the ground is it the same as a knee? Is he down or does the play continue? This is a serious question.

If just your elbow touches you are not down.
