How come everybody is saying that the db's have always been our weakness?

has a lot to do with UT pass defense being ranked around 58th last season.

Dow you guys not remember how solid the db's were around 02 and 03?

R. Baker and G. Wilson at Safety and Greer and Allen on the corner...who are ALL in the NFL right now.

Antwan Stewart got hyped up after his freshman year because he got a couple lucky int's. That didnt stop him from helping just about every SEC wr polish up their highlight tapes. Stewart is an awful corner and is lucky that the coaching staff thinks highly of him because he works hard. Before he had the quickness to play the corner but no instincts. Now after messing up his knee...he has neither. He's decent at safety but Morley is way better and will continue to get better as he gets more game experience.

Inky Johnson was/is the best corner on the team. His position is locked up. J. Wade is so much improved from last year that the sky is the limit for him this season. If he gets a few pbu's and a few picks throughout the season... he'll be looking at an all american year. Very exciting. Heffney is the most important DB on the team. His move from corner to safety was huge for us and he will only get better. He is solid. Morley should be the ss and R.Fellows will be the utility guy. Expect him at safety, corner, nickleback...whereever he is needed.

I, for one, am very excited for the DB's this season. Inky is simply a lockdown corner, probably the most underappreciated players on the team last year. He's the reason J.Wade got those opportunities to pick off balls because Inky had his side locked down. Hop he gets the accolades he deserves this year. If J Wade can finally reach the potential that everyone knows he can reach, that will be a flat out scary combo for teams to avoid. And with that being the case... you should want the most freakishly athletic guy running around causing chaos and closing on deep balls. That guy is Morley. Heffney is also a good tackler and solid in coverage and should be the leader of the group.

A few quick points. D Morley has done nothing impressive on the field thus far. If he was so much better, he would have beaten out a "awful" player like Antwan. Inky is not "locked" into any position at all. I think Wade and Fellows are both ahead of him on the depth chart.

we've had great talent. coaching has been the problem. chavis cant control every little aspect of the defense. larry slade has been a let down.

Wade has been consistently overhyped EVERY SINGLE offseason of his career, yet he hasn't produced squat when the regular season rolls around. I'll believe it when I see it.

I also have seen no evidence whatsoever of Inky Johnson being a lockdown corner. Once again, I'll believe it when I see it.

Perhaps these guys just look great because they're practicing against UT's wide receivers, which proved last year to have an inability to create separation from defensive backs.

Chavis is the defensive coordinator. If he realizes that his defensive backs coach is doing a lousy job and doesn't step in himself to correct the problems, then Chavis is to blame. If Chavis doesn't realize that his defensive backs coach is doing a lousy job, then once again Chavis is to blame.

A team's defensive backfield is not "every little aspect of the defense". It's 36% of the defensive players on the field in a normal defensive set, and more than that when in a nickel or dime defense.

Fulmers probably the reason Chavis hasn't stepped in to replace Slade.

I don't care if Chavis replaces Slade or not. Chavis is the defensive coordinator. If he perceives a problem with the secondary, then he should ensure that it gets fixed, whether he has to personally fix the problem or not. If Chavis doesn't perceive a problem with the secondary, then he's blind.

I think a lot of it is the style we play. We put guys out on an island a lot.

I agree he has...but he showed vast improvement last year and it's time for him to step up.

about inky.... Did you not watch any games at all last year? He made so many good stops and had great coverage throughout the season.

I must have forgot all about the reason I made my reply before I started rambling.

The db's are not blame much at all. When we have the type of athletes that we have in the secondary and we sit around in cover 2 and cover 3 zones all game.... you have to ask yourself..wtf is going on?

Now is the perfect time to utilize all the talent we have and we can really see now if fulmer and chavis really understand football or not. With us losing most of front 7, we will NEED to blitz to get pressure on the qb consistently. Instead of sitting back in some weak ass zone, we can bump and run and man up to show teams that we are still physical. All our db's posses the ability to play man coverage the entire game and match up decently well. Although we may be shorter, our speed and agility can make up for that.

LET THE DB'S PLAY BALL CHAVIS

UT hasn't had many lockdown corners in the past, probably Jason Allen and Dewayne Goodrich were the best 2 of late. Unfortunately, Goodrich knows about lockdown in more ways then one. :ermm:

I dont understand why there has to be so much negativity going on. It is a new year and time to celebrate. Our D is always good and our secondary is the most versatile and experienced part of that D. Lets hear some positive stuff and quit bashing these guys every chance we get.
