I dont see the issue. He is a walk on so hes not short changing the athletic dept and his cause is not for higher wages for himself. What is the issue if he wants to protest this? Thats his right. More power to him.

Would he be willing to pay a higher tuition? If I am not mistaken, most service oriented jobs accept tips. Those students can raise the pay scale of those workers if they want to.
But the bigger question is why is this news story.

He can protest whatever he wants, but he's still an idiot. Good luck w/ bringing about change, man.

If he's from Virginia his education is being subsidized by the trucker driving 60 hours a week to put food on the table. He is part of the system he's protesting.

He probably wont change anything but I applaud him for fighting for what he believes in before the world crushes his spirit leaving him a jaded cynic. :)

He used his single mom as an example but she sent 3 kids to college - by definition she was earning a "living wage".

Is it really a hunger strike if you don't have demands that must be met before you resume eating? (technicality I know).

Virginia Cavaliers walk-on Joseph Williams' hunger strike - ESPN

So he doesn't hold any grudges against his dad who abandoned him, but he does against "the system" for not paying high enough wages?

Gives you a gauge for what his opinion is worth. :shakehead:

How dare he want people who work really hard to be able to pay their bills!

These workers should be sleeping under bridges. They have it too good as it is!

Bankers need more bailouts and more billions of dollars in bonus money. But these workers better not get a $2 an hour raise!

I hope there is nothing that I want to protest that makes me go on a hunger strike.

I agree cuz my big ass love to eat lol.

I agree though people in the service industry deserve more pay. I was a custodian and maintenance man for 4 years. I busted my ass, pay sucked, no raise, no benefits.... Datgum it sucked!! I got a better job now but I feel for those working in that field.

How much is the football staff being paid? Why not just pay every employee at the school the exact same no matter what their position. I am sure all the coaches, faculty, and the professors (some of whom i am sure support this movement) will be more than happy to sacrifice for the over all good of all concerned. After graduation and on every job interview when ask what salary he is seeking I am sure this well educated young man will state "no more than the lowest paid employee"

If they're low skill jobs that don't even require a high school dimploma and no experience, then no....they probably don't deserve a raise.

No one makes a person work a certain job. If you don't like a job and the pay that comes with it, you're free to search for a different one with better benefits.

Damn thats bull****, they gotta live too. Just because a person has a low skill job with no diploma doesn't mean they deserve a raise. At least they are working. My Grandaddy had a 4th grade education and he busted his ass all his life and made a good living for himself.

I agree Grizz that a person has to make a living, but that is the burden of said person.

My grandpa couldn't read or write, but ran his own sawmill and made a good living. If he would have been dependent of someone else for his employment, he would have been in trouble.

I agree, but sometimes those other jobs are not out there. and sometimes that's all can get. And I will say that lack of a diploma hurts them from getting a better job. I think cleaning up someone else's **** deserves more pay. I'm not talking $100,000 a year but wage where they can make a decent living and not struggle.

I'm not knocking someone for doing what they have to. Plenty of people have improved themselves.

But low skill jobs shouldn't pay that great. Anyone can push a broom or empty garbage cans or similiar type of work. There's no special skill involved. That's why better paying jobs pay better. Education, experience, skill, something is required.

Just because someone works 40 hours a week doesn't mean they deserve a bunch of money if they have a job a high school student is qualified for.
