Cameron Seldon, one of Tennessee’s top targets in the 2023 class, now is just hours away from announcing his college decision. The four-star athlete from Northumberland High School in Heathsville, Va., is planning to make his choice known Thursday afternoon, and the Vols are one of his finalists after hosting him on aa pair of visits over the past few months.
The 6-foot-1, 219-pound Seldon plans to choose between Maryland, Penn State and Tennessee. He's set to reveal his commitment at 4:30 p.m. Eastern time during a ceremony that will be
streamed live on CBS Sports HQ.
Seldon is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 24 overall prospect and No. 3 athlete in the 2023 class and the No. 2 rising senior from the state of Virginia. He's also a four-star prospect in the industry-generated 247Sports Composite, where he's ranked the No. 104 overall player and No. 7 athlete in the 2023 class.
All three predictions on the 247Sports Crystal Ball point to Tennessee as the favorite to land him. The Vols have been one of the top contenders for him since he made his first trip to Knoxville the weekend of March 26 to attend their first spring practice in pads, and his official visit to Tennessee the weekend of June 17 only further established the Vols as one of the teams to beat.
He traveled to Penn State the weekend of June 24 on the most recent of his three official visits. The Nittany Lions have been widely viewed as Tennessee's main competition for Seldon down the stretch, and sources close to his recruitment have indicated that'e still the case going into today's announcement.
But the momentum that the Vols built with Seldon during his official visit to Knoxville last month hasn't faded over the past few weeks.
Tennessee has continued to make a strong push for him, with Vols wide receivers coach
Kelsey Pope, running backs coach
Jerry Mack, offensive coordinator
Alex Golesh and senior offensive analyst Max Thurmond all having been involved in his recruitment. Five-star Tennessee quarterback commitment
Nicholaus Iamaleava of Long Beach, Calif., and other members of the Vols' 2023 class also have done their best to convince Seldon to join them in Knoxville.
Seldon could address Tennessee's need for additional help at wide receiver or running back — or perhaps both. The Vols have talked with him about the possibility of using him as an all-purpose weapon on offense, in a role similar to the one that wide receiver
Deebo Samuel has played for the NFL's San Francisco 49ers, and sources close to Seldon's recruitment believe he's intrigued by his potential role in Tennessee's offense.
At this point, the Vols still appear to be the favorites to land him entering the final hours ahead of his scheduled announcement. Tennessee has remained optimistic about its chances of landing him, by all accounts, while Penn State's confidence seems to have faded since his official visit with the Nittany Lions less than two weeks ago.
Barring a last-minute shift in momentum, the Vols seem likely to hold off Penn State and add another top target to their 2023 recruiting class when Seldon reveals his choice Thursday afternoon.
