Vacation / Travel

I don't know if I've traveled more than most, but I read somewhere that the "average" person flies once or twice a year so perhaps I have. I get that general vibe all the time, but perhaps it is just me. I don't think I'm a very loud or obnoxious person. I'm going to France next month and actually cringing about that aspect of the trip.

I hope you have a better experience than you are expecting. I've been to France a few times. Great people. I have never understood where the caricature of rude French people came from.

Total disclosure: There was a young, very drunk couple on the train to Calais that were a little loud, but the worst thing was them eating sardines in the booth in front of us. That stank like hell!!

France has its good and bad like everywhere. We traveled around the country for several weeks and met plenty of nice, interesting people along with some possibly rude, definitely direct people. We are quiet, nice people, tried to speak French and enjoyed the local flair.

We seemed to run into the nicer people in the countryside/smaller towns where things just seemed to move slower and there were less tourist. The more direct, possibly rude people were either in heavily toured areas (i.e. Normandy) or the major cities (Paris). I felt like people in the major cities acted the same way American's act to me in New York, DC, LA, etc. They just move faster and get annoyed with people being in their way.

The single issue that seemed to hit a nerve with the locals whenever we had a problem was that we didn't speak French well enough and some people really seemed to take offense to that.

I spent 3 summers in Europe when I was in college and noticed something similar. The French seemed to be annoyed if you tried to speak French and didn’t do so well. On the other hand Germans thought it was great if you attempted to speak German to them.

Yeah Carnival called me the other day with a $200 casino voucher . I told them to bump us to a suite and then we’d talk some more . Doesn’t look likely. We really have enjoyed our cruises quite a bit this past year though.

I leaned up against a freshly painted wall by the aft pool that wasn't marked, getting paint all over my back. They comped our entire sign and sail account, on day 6 before they sold the drink packages. WORTH IT!

That’s awesome. I’d take it. The cheers package is t cheap, but worth it.

Travel is what this world is made for,so much beauty and culture. I find it kind of bad for the people who don't want to get out and experience it. As is said though to each there own.

It was abused.

That’s the only way I know how. Of course now I might not ever be able to drink again because of a freak genetic issue, but I’m still holding out hope. Not many things I enjoy more than getting on board and getting a very non-masculine multi rum boat drink after standing in a hot sweaty line in port for a long time . At that moment it’s time for us to relax and put away email and get off the grid.

Anyone ever been to Toronto?

Went three years ago to cross off visiting the blue jays park. Very clean and walkable city. Spent 2 days doing touristy stuff and that was probably more than was needed to get a feel of the city. A Canadian Chicago is a very good comparison. Went down to Niagara Falls on the 3rd day. Only negatives we found were the food was average and it was a little hard to drive. Seemed to be a lack of street signs and was somewhat difficult to navigate even with Waze running.

After looking around, think I may fly to Halifax and check it out for a few days and then do the Cabot Trail.

Thinking about heading to Riviera Maya in September or October to celebrate. Definitely interested in some suggestions for all inclusive resorts that can have a bit of privacy and not too many kids. We stayed at the Grand Sunset Princess for our honeymoon nearly 3 years ago and it was pretty sweet because we had our own pool with other guests that had the same style of room. We are looking for something similar.

-TIA
