Vanderbilt's Jaylen Carey commits to Tennessee

8 points 6 rebounds in 20 minutes a game. His weakness is free throws. Strong rebounder will certainly help the team.

Unless he drastically improves after shooting and making several hundred a day this summer, he’ll need to get his 20 mpg in before TN is in the bonus. But, Phillips can’t hit them either. Maybe Estrella and Felix will be the end of game posts.

Don't get me wrong, I like the pick and think Carey fits in well. But I do wonder if this means no stretch 4 coming, Ament or otherwise. Where do the minutes go? Don't think you can keep five bigs happy, especially with how much Cade/Felix were playing last year.

Yeah, Awaka is a much more apt (and realistic) Tennessee comp.
For sure, and nothing wrong with that, Awaka was a 36 game starter for a Top 10-15 team, so if that’s essentially what we are getting I don’t see much reason to complain or not be happy. Their numbers are very similar across the board, even from a MPG standpoint, but not surprisingly Carey fouls less than Awaka lol

There’s the rub lol. This era of college sports is very nice when you’re the one benefitting.

Now go tell the mid major program who just lost their entire starting 5 how great it is.
I personally don't have time to watch multiple levels of Basketball. So, I'm good. Keep em coming Rick!

The one big negative I see is, we can say goodbye to Cinderella in the tournament.

He is thick in the legs and waist. Difficult to move and can provide a 1 on 1 scoring threat by his physicality. We have a platoon at the 4 & 5 spot.

Okpara/Estrella at the 5 and Phillips/Carey at the 4.

I think we will be an even more physically imposing team this next year.

Hard to replace the defense of Mashack and the scoring of Lanier and Gainey…but theoretically, second chance points should be higher and 3 point shots should be a little more open.

We need a 2 guard badly but I like what we have.

I think an Admiral (sophomore year) comp is pretty accurate. Plays with that fire as well.
Yeah, not a terrible comp, either. At least statistically. Obviously, Admiral evolved into more of a defined wing, especially in the next two seasons, and I don't see that happening for Carey.
Admiral was also a significantly better outside shooter, which allowed him to develop into the 2/3 guard he was as a junior and senior.

You didn't notice Igor not showing up in almost all the big games? He was pretty bad the last part of the season and into the tourney. Dumb fouls that took him out of games early and dumber turnovers.

I wouldn't compare Igor and Gainey. For the most part, Gainey showed up and was terrific coning off the bench
You are so right. Gainey was one of the main scores for the Vols. Igor couldn't even get a shot off against Houston. What he have 2 points for the game.

I dvr’ed the second Vandy game and rewatched it focused on Carey. I think I counted 14 fouls that could have been called on him. More illegal screens than legal one’s. Always pushing with hands / forearms for rebounding position. Never saw Tobe play any rougher. Wonder what causes officials to call more fouls on some players more than others who play a similar aggressive style?

I just think it depends on who else we finish with.

If we get Freeman, he can play the 4, not ideal, but let them battle it out and see.

If he starts, he starts and I have no complaints. He’s ranked #34 for a reason.
Who is Freeman? Owen Freeman committed to Creighton 3 days ago…
