Verbal commits question

Considering CBJ came out and said we would take 30 this year, I would go with that number.

As to Swafford, he initially was a gray-shirt, but he decided he wanted to get on campus as soon as possible. He is now paying his own way as a walk-on. If he would have stayed a gray-shirt, he would enroll in Jan and counted on the 2014 class. If he pays his way 1 more year, he won't count towards any class....I assume that is what Coach Jones will do. If we give him a scholarship after this season, he would count as an Initial Qualifier for this class. Walk-ons have to pay their way for at least 2 years to not count as "initial qualifiers".

The SEC put an oversigning rule in place, so for every one we go over (presumably the 30 number - 25 +5 back-counts), we lose 2 or 3 scholarships NEXT year.

I don't know myself, but I have heard the term "Grey Shirt" a signed recruit until a open scholarship is available. I don't know if a grey shirt can practice with the team or not. I would like to know what you guys know about this "grey shirt" thing......or let me know if there is no such a thing. Go Vols.

Grey shirting a player is making a player that has committed to your program wait to receive their scholarship after they were promised a scholarship which makes them have to pay their own way through school for a semester to preserve their eligibility.

He was gray shirted so, is playing without a scholarship.

I pretty certain gray shirts can play or practice with the team. So he took the walk-on route to get playing time this year. Of course, hoping that he will earn a scholly at some point.

This is not a thread on whether oversigning is ethical or not. I have just been trying to figure out what the "magic number is that we can sign without any penalties.

So there is a lot of talk about all the 31 verbal commits which is over the number allowed if all of them sign. Although I am still confused about the numbers game that come up with the correct number a program can sign without it being considered over signing. To me it would be 85 scholarships minus attrition (Sr class and some of Jr class and players that will not be eligible because of grades) but seems to be more complex than that.

I am wondering, does anyone know how many JuCo scholarships are included in the 31 commits. I ask because in my research a program can accept only a certain number of player in a calendar year but JuCo players can sign as soon as December 18 2013 of this year. That would put the JuCo's in a different calendar year as the incoming freshman who can't sign until Feb 5. 2014. If we have 3 or 4 JuCo's (not sure how many) that sign on December 18. that would put us back to 27/28 for the freshman class and there would be no oversigning unless we went over the 85 scholly's.

Thoughts?

At present, we have 4 JC comitts, but are likely to have 1 or 2 more.

Best explanation I've seen:

NCAA allows 25 signees per year, plus back counted players.

Last year we signed 22, of whom 2 were back counted to 2012, or 20 toward the 25 for 2013. This gives us 5 openings for EEs to back count for 2014.

This gives a total of 30 spots for 2014.

The fact that it is the number that CBJ has been using is just icing.

If you gray-shirt, you are NOT even enrolled in school, much less playing/practicing.

If Swafford would have followed through with the gray-shirt, he would still be sitting at home waiting to enroll in Jan. He would then be considered a True Freshman in Fall 2014. As it stands he chose to walk on so he is a True Freshman now.

EEs can be backcounted to the previous year. In this case, we have 5 spots from 2013 available for EEs, leaving 25 spots for 2014.

If you can show how we can backcount more than 5, I'll accept that number. It seems too high.

Preferred walk on paying his own way...will get a scholly off the 85 man limit...not the 14 class...which IF he had greyshirted, he would have counted against

Yes, but he has to pay his way one more year before getting his scolarship without counting toward any class.

I got the 21 from Volnation's homepage which included J. Lee.
5 commits from our previous class were early enrollees. Some of those could backcount to the previous class I believe bring that number down to 16 which would mean we could backcount 9? Or is there a cap on how many you can backcount?

That would get us to the number of 34 without sign and place or greyshirts.

Tennessee adds five early enrollees - SEC Blog - ESPN

Espn 24/7 and scout have Jonathan Johnson while volnation and rival don't have him listed. Which makes me wonder if he is on scholarship or not???

Coach Jones knows what he is going to do and how many he can take. I'm sure we will get more commitments than we can possible sign. Coach will have them ranked in a certain order and those on the bottom will probably be asked to grey shirt or told that things have changed and they don't fit in anymore. He most likely will take a few bad raps about cutting guys loose at the last minute but it is necessary to upgrade the talent on the roster. Won't be like this every year hopefully.
