I don’t know if it has to do with another player being in the spotlight this season, but Santi has probably had his worst season of offensive production. Let me be clear, he has played outstanding defense, and has been able to force turnovers and get steals, but having zero points yesterday is unacceptable..

He is a non factor in most games offensively and routinely gives up shots that are easy. That is the biggest issue. It would be different if he were Magic Johnson like flying around the court recording 10-12 assists per game while creating offense for others. He isn’t and him being a non factor along with James will be a huge liability in the tournament against an opponent that can shoot

Barnes must recognize when Aidoo is not going to be effective inside and tell Vescovi to shoot. He must shoot on the catch, if he waits to play 2 man with Aidoo/Awaka it's too late. I like him shooting and Aidoo/Awaka rebounding.

I’m glad you started this thread because I’m sure Santi was very thrilled about having no points. Now he knows.

I’m just glad you two have each other.

His last 10 games offensively he is averaging 4 ppg, 2 assists, and 1 turnover. On what planet is that even remotely good for a starting guard on top 10 team in the nation? Defensively he is averaging 1 steal and two fouls per game in that same stretch. Those are abysmal numbers for a player with his experience

Wonder what Carr or Dillione's numbers would look like given the same number of minutes? I've also seen Knecht's defense improve as the season has gone along. Feel one or both those guys might also show some improvement as well defensively? All just speculation on my part and a moot point. There's no way Barnes would play either of those two guys over Vescovi. Like it or not, the prospects for the post season will depend to a large degree on what kind of production/play JJJ and Vescovi give us. 3 on 5 might get you past some lesser opponents early in the tournament, but at some point early on, you're gonna get got and head home. And if Aidoo has an off game along with those 2 being non-producers, you might see us in one of those super embarrassing 2-15 upsets. Unfortunately, if Barnes had the answers, I suspect we'd have seen it by now. Gonna be really interesting to see what this team does in the tournaments and how the minutes are allocated.

Barnes said it best....

“He's got to do it. He's been here, I mean, I wish I could (get him shooting confidently). If I could it, I would, I would do it. I mean, he's going to have to do it. He's going to have to trust in himself and believe in how good a player he is and he's going to have to do it. And again, if I could, I'd have him all razor sharp every game. And the mental, the mental side of it, he's got to do it and we need him to do it. And we need everybody, not just Santi. We need everybody to do what they can do. And again, we obviously, you got a guy (in) Dalton can get 40 points, but I'm telling you, he could have gotten his teammates involved more today too. He's got to do that.”

Agreed but how do you change anything at this point. For all arguments above, we still achieved SEC season champs and most likely a 1-2 seed in the tourney. SV is a pesky, heady defender who has some intangibles that don't show up in the stats. However, he HAS to be a threat to score or you might as well have Mashack in the entire time. Here's hoping SV gets his mojo back and has a solid running in his last tournament. 🙏

His apologists are not going to like your post

Vescovi and James are the key to this team being able to make a run in the tournament. They combined for 8 points yesterday (0 by SV) They combined for 37 against UK the first time we played them. They don't have to get 37 between them every game, but around 20 would be nice.

Based on tourney history, I'm not confident that will happen. Probably need Aidoo and Awaka to be the Key.

I have a little more confidence in JJJ. He can hit an occasional three and he still rebounds.

Vescovi has been lost all year with a couple of exceptions.

I have brought this up before and got clobbered from his fan base, but Vescovi is one of the most overrated players I've seen in a long time. I've never seen him take control of a game, or be the winning drive/score. He seems to be able to score only when a game is out of reach and we got a nice lead. He won't take an open shot for whatever reason--gotta be shooting in the low 30%. Vescovi is why you use the portal to improve each season--if someone is not adding to the team, go find a player who can hit shots.

Seems to always be Vescovi and James when we lose not doing their part for the team. Dalton puts up 40 and we still lose. Kentucky was motivated to win and we were playing hard still we shot horribly for most of the game.

Barnes should make him practice doing jump shots and stuff like that. Honestly, If I wanted to play guard on a top rated team, I would be embarrassed to not contribute more than he does. It would motivate me to spend every waking hour of my life practicing . You want your point guards begging for the ball because they have uber confidence in making a basket.

Here is a very telling stat for SV. It speaks for itself. I post this knowing that SV is better than he's playing this year and it only takes one shot to get your mojo back. I believe he can do it.
After all, this is a 2 time all sec 1st team player as decided by the coaches. 2022+2023
There has been only 1 game he did not attempt a 3pointer(UNC)-not included in the below stat.

SV has shot 0% FG% in 7 games this season.
SV has shot 0% 3point% in 13 games this season.
