VN Lawn Experts

I've had great results in not ever having to dethatch by following one major rule which is basically "don't create thatch". You do this by not letting your lawn get so high that when you mow it you start spitting out clumps of clippings. In the unfortunate event that your mower starts dropping clumps you better spread them out or rake it and trash it, otherwise you are good to continually mulch mow.

Yep, excellent approach my good man

Might as well give this old thread a bump...

I'm looking to get some top dressing to level the bottom half of my sloped backyard. I've had some erosion over the years and some topsoil loss and I've got just lots of uneven spots. I've determined buying bags of cheap soil from Home Depot and doing one bag at a time just isn't going to cut it. Do you all have someone you'd recommend to get soil from or to do the job? The area I'm looking at is about 23 feet wide by 35 feet long. I'm open for suggestions.

I used Hines Fine Soils several years ago.

Do sob webworms always display webs? I have a bunch of white moths in my lawn. In the spots where they are most numerous seems to correlate to some thinning of the grass. I’ve done some searching and it makes the most sense that these are what they are, however I’ve never seen any webs. I’ve put down broad spectrum insecticide but it hasn’t done anything

Usually you can see webs early in the morning with the dew on the grass.

I’ve looked and have never seen any
Put 1/4 cup of household detergent in 2 gallons of water. Mark off a 1 yard by 1 yard square. Pour the 2 gallon mix on the 1 yard section. If more than about 12-15 come to the surface, you need to treat.

Did you put down granular bug control with a spreader or was it hose end sprayer treatment?

I’ve done both. The area that I used the sprayer on no longer has the moths, but it appears to be the most damaged. Could be though from heat damage as it’s right next to the street. I have tall fescue

If you reseed the area, get endophyte enhanced seed . It can withstand webworms better. Also, keeping your grass well fed and watered helps if that is possible.

I do the Scott’s 4 step and I’m pretty religious about watering
Best products for sod webworms are Bacillus Thuringiensis (BT-kurstaki) which is a naturally occurring bacterium, or a product containing Spinosad, such as Monterey Garden Insect Spray. You can find either on line, if not at Home Depot/Lowe's.

Yes, It could be dormant from summer heat and not having much rain lately. Keep watering it well, anytime from late evening to early morning is the best time to water. Never water during the heat of the day. If it doesn't green back up in a few weeks as it slowly gets cooler and we get more rain then it's likely dead. Fall is the best time to plant Fescue seed.

It is best to water very early in the morning, so the grass doesn't stay wet all night, and create an environment conducive to fungi . As soon as day breaks, it will dry off pretty quickly. I agree with the rest of that.
