Some of us grew up in OR and practiced the drill of sheltering under our desks. I also remember the fallout shelter signs around town.

Not related to nuclear war but I remember going into the hall to shelter during actual tornado WARNINGS. Nowadays, they close schools 24 hours ahead of time just based on a storm FORECAST. We would have needed a major volcanic eruptions to get school canceled in the 70s

Floods that closed the bridges were the ONLY non snow events that I ever recall schools closing for. We were tougher back in those days (as said by EVERY generation of parents of course)
