What changed during those two years?

I‘ll tell you what. Once they lost control of just one of their tightly controlled and censored squawk boxes; the left went totally bat excrement crazy and has spent every single day trying to destroy Musk economically and socially. And now the Administration has even started using its regulatory agencies to hinder and handicap SpaceX, even at risk to the loss of US leadership in space to China.
Elon realized he was basically going to have to fight for survival against the full weight of media and the administrative state. All the while trying to keep the world‘s most successful social platform free from government censorship.
Elon Musk turned to Trump out of a need for self preservation.
