I think Shockley is going to suprise alot of people next year with his ability to throw the ball. I think that him getting minimal plays in an offense designed around David Greene has really hurt peoples (including alot of DAWG fans) opinions of him. He has a great arm, good accuracey and could be considered a fourth running back to our already completely LOADED backfield. Im not saying we will win the NC but I think we will get atleast 10 wins next year.

I think UGA is going to be fine on offense - they really weren't all that explosive with Greene this year. It's on defense where they really have to make up for some attrition. It'll be tough to replace Pollack and Thomas Davis.

Taking Georgia lightly would be a mistake.

Richt is an excellent coach and a great recruiter. Even with the losses Georgia still has a lot of talent. Georgia's last four recruiting classes have all been ranked in the top ten. 2002-#3, 2003- #6, 2004- #6 and 2005 #9.

I agree GAVOL to an extent. We will have a few studs returning at DE (Quentin Moses and Will Thompson) not to mention possibley the best DL recruiting class in the nation. Taking over for TD will probably be Greg Blue or Kelin Johson who are also big hitters but they also have better cover skills (we also recruited a monster saftey by the name of CJ Byrd). For linebackers we are going to be set, although we lost Odell we get back Tony Taylor who missed last year with a knee injury and Danny Verdun Wheeler and Jarvis Jackson who are studs in their own right. CB's will continue to improve(this is our weakest position by far) with Paul Oliver getting more reps and maybe Tim Jennings will grow a couple of inches. You also failed to mention that we lost our DC Brian VanGorder to the NFL but we pick up Willie Martinez who has worked with VanGorder for most of their careers and both run the same schemes. Right now I thinkour biggest lost is going to be in the leadership role, someone is going to have to step up and take control of the defense.

I'm not even sure that losing TD is all bad. He was a great player, but I think he was probably an outside linebacker playing strong safety. We really burned him a couple of times in coverage.

Did Gholston graduate? Pollack got all the press, but Gholston created a lot of havoc in the middle and took a lot of double teams.

Fulmer never went out in May to personally recruit and when Richt and Saban came into the league they did and that is why you saw a rise in both programs since no other SEC coach was doing it, it made the recruits feel special. While Fulmer did very well he lost out on a lot of really good players because of the fact he didn't go out in May to personally recruit. You also had the Tee Martin incident and negative recruiting that year that cost UT. If you go back and look at the classes signed in 99, 00, 01, they were good classes but not the kind of classes needed to remain one of the top 2 teams in the SEC. The 2002 class started the upswing and with this recruiting class UT should be back as one of the top 2 teams in the SEC year in and year out.

Alabama is experienced but still thin and a couple of injuries could very well be the difference between 3 in the west and 4th in the west.

TNVOLS1, don't you also think that Richt closing off the borders of GA had some affect also? I think we really reaped the benefits in the 90s of having guys like Goff and Donnan at UGA. I can't imagine being able to go into GA like we did in '97 and sign Cosey Coleman, Deon Grant, and Jamal Lewis all from within 100 miles of the UGA campus at the same time.

Fulmer not going out in May was a difference. Richt has never really closed the borders but he did make it harder to get recruits out of Georgia and the reason is he went out in May. It all boils down to certian other HC's in the SEC raised the stakes in recruiting and it took Fulmer 3 years to catch up and it hurt all across the Southeast as far as Tennessee recruiting goes.

1996 (Donnan)
Buck Buxton DT
Terry Jolley DE
1997 (Donnan)
Cosey Coleman OG
Deon Grant S
Jamal Lewis RB
1998 (Donnan)
Tad Golden CB
Edward Kendrick DE/DT
1999 (Donnan)
Charles Roberson DE
2000 (Donnan)
Tony Campbell LB
Hayden Moore FB
Jason Respert OG/OC
Sean Young OT
2001 (Richt)
Michael Collins WR
Jabari Davis RB
William Revill FB
Derrick Tinsley RB
2002 (Richt)
NONE
2003 (Richt)
Bill Grimes WR
Jarod Parrish S
2004 (Richt)
Inquoris Johnson ATH
Cameron Mayo OL
Anthony Parker OL
2005 (Richt)
Chris Scott OL

UT signed 12 while Donnan was at Georgia his last 5 years while they have signed 10 in Richt's first 5 years there. What everyone forgets when they talk about UT recruiting Georgia is only 1 year really has stood out in the last 10 and that was the 97 class and that is because it had Coleman, Grant and Lewis all 3 in that class. As for Lewis UT recrutied him very hard because they really didn't like the higher rated back out of that class who Georgia liked more in Jasper Sanks. Because of the Tee Martin scandal UT lost Ronnie Brown to Auburn because of it according to Brown himself. That in and of itself helped contribute to UT's downtrend.

So TNVOL1, you think the the momentum shift for TN is exclusively the result of Fulmer making some changes in the way he recruits or do you think other factors also have come into play? Anyone else want to weigh in?

My :twocents: worth.

I'm a die hard vol fan. Grew up with my grandpa always keeping me updated on it and I just grew into. My dad is a UT and UGA alum and worked his entire career in the UGA system as a research professor. So, when the orange is not on the field with them, I am really glad to see their rise back to football of old.

UGA- Richt is the best thing to happen to them since Herschel Walker. They will only continue to get better. Richt just seems to be an all around package as a head coach. They will be our thorn as FLA was, only with class. You can hate the competition they will be to us, but Richt is a class act and UGA will be a strong foe with admiration for their abilities, not necessarily the hatred we had aginst Spurrier. Shockley is far better than he has been able to show. He will be a big factor to UGA and their opponents. He has been patient, played within Green's system, and done well. He will have a career year if Richt revamps the offensive play to exploit his strengths.

Alabama - Will be stronger next year, and will continue to progress as Mike Shula gels into the job. He is young, but I think he will be the ressurection of Alabama football, as we have seen it in the past. He has a lot of hidden talent that will come out as he matures into a head coach position. The only pitfall there has been Alabama's lack of committment to establish consistency in coaching positions. If they will commit to Shula long term, Alabama will rise from the ashes. They do have a ways to go to be a perennial dominent power in the conference, but they will get there if Shula is allowed to stay and clean the program up and return some integrity to Alabama. Alabama had a knack for running off winning coaches after the Bear. Curry won, Perkins won, Stallings won and was allowed to hang around, but grew weary of the pressures there. They need consistency in coaching. It works for UT, regardless of the bashing that goes on aginst Fulmer and RS at times. Consistency is the proven success at UT that no one else had in the SEC except UF, and they won too.

Auburn- Same scenario. Just need to stick with Tubby, and they will hang around. A long term commitment to Tubby will resolve large spikes in their recruiting and year to year performance. They will become a perennial power if they keep that consistency at coaching.

Florida - Undetermined. I think Myer has the potential to do well. He has to prove his ability to recruit in the SEc, and it will either flourish or flop from there. They will do well this coming season because they will be playing purely on determination and the will to prove they haven't gone anywhere. After that it is soley on his ability to get the players there. He has the system. He's proved he can coach with that system, and although he is moving up from the MWC, he did beat teams from top conferences with a little talent on his part as a whole.

So. Carolina - May not win titles, but Spurrier will be a spoiler to someone every year. He will not be able to draw the recruits to SC. The recruiting battlefield is not in his favor to draw to SC. Not an attractive place geographically. He'll get decent leftovers, and do decently with them. But, no rise to dominance is foreseeable for them. I think he will do better then anyone else has. Holtz was good and is a class coach and a great football mind, but he was at the end of his career when he decided to unretire and go to SC.

LSU - Got saved by Perriloux deciding to stay and go with them. I think there future is with him at QB. Russell did not impress me in his development with the play time he got this year. They are loaded and will probably be the West this year. I don't think the coaching change hurt them at all. If anything it was an improvement. He could not close the big games. They always choked somehwere in his seasons there. He was a good coach, and probably the best at LSU in a long time. But, he was not their long term answer.

UT - What can you say. Except, just play your game and not to the talent of your opponent. Get rid of the 'just get the win' mentality and play strong, hard nose football. The talent has been there all this time. We just got complacent and only expected enough out of our players to get by. People will rise to your expectations. Set those expectations, force RS to open up and attack. He has the mind to do it if you expect it of him. Fulmer is a class coach, a great coach and great recruiter. He wants the best for the program, the university, and the fans. He is at times too nice, and just needs to chew some butt internally and reset the standard and require the paly to that standard, both coaches and players.

Hopefully we can get RC doing some position coaching or something after next season. I think Rick Clausen has amazing potential as an OC in the future.

And I agree, I do have a lot of respect for Coach Richt.

I can't wait for the Bama game next year. I'd actually like to see UT beat them if they were at least somewhat challening on offense.

I probably should have worded this thread a different way. There was a momentum shift for TN towards success sometime after the last peach bowl that has continued to grow and is still growing today. What caused the shift and when did the light come on?...no responses for two days..maybe this thread is dead.
