Guys, I think we are taking this Kiffin news all wrong.
Here are my reasons for thinking this is actually a good news situation.
1. I just happened to watch 2 of USC's games before the firing. I saw their games against WSU and ASU, which was the night of the firing. Kiffin, being the control freak, was calling the plays. Those play calls seemed very inept. Kiffin may be able to draw up plays in an office, but calling them during the game? At least on those night, I feel he was folding under pressure. Once Kiffin was fired, and Orgeron took over, he had Helton take over the play calls, and USC did fine after Kiffin was gone. If I am right about this, Saban has not added a coaching weapon, he has brought in a liability.
2. Let's just say that Kiffin did not get fired, and is still coaching USC. What are the chances of Tennessee ever playing them? A bowl game, maybe, but what are the odds? Slim to None.
3. Saban was quoted as saying that the areas Kiffin had "problems" with would not be his responsibility at Alabama. Really, Saban? Is Lane Kiffin going to be the only offensive coordinator in college football who does not go on the recruiting trail? I remember a report just months after Kiffin left here that he showed up at LAX in a stretch limo to bring a recruit on campus. How stupid is that? And does anyone think for a moment that he will not commit violations in the future? Kiffin is so arrogant that he will slip up somehow. And if he lasts, Alabama very well could end up with sanctions.
It is also worth noting the following. Earlier this season, Penn State got some of the Sandusky sanctions lifted. When USC inquired about having some of theirs lifted, they were turned down flat. That tells me that there is someone at the NCAA that doesn't care for Kiffin, and when he screws up at Bama, there will be little patience.
I know when Bama comes to town, some fans will do something a little out of line. They feel that this situation calls for action. We could use conventional weapons, but that could take years, and cost millions of lives. No, in this case, they think they need to go all out. They think this situation absolutely requires a futile and stupid gesture be done on someone's part, and they are just the guys to do it.
However,as tempting as that would be, I say we give our boys in orange the moral support and encouragement to handle it on the field. As great and invincible as Alabama fans think their team is, ask Auburn and Oklahoma how invincible they are. With Kiffin calling the plays, a victory feast may have been set.
