Volnation Mechanics I Need Your Opinion.

So I got another question for you mechanics...

Got a 2003 Honda Accord EX (4-Cyclinder) with over 220K miles... Over the last several months I have started feeling a hard vibration when the car is idling at a stop. If I turn the steering wheel either direction (while still idling) the vibration is even more noticeable. If I turn my AC off the vibration cuts in half but is still there, particularly when I turn the steering wheel. I've had my mechanic check the engine mounts and he says they are all in good condition. My AC and heat work so I don't feel that it's my compressor putting any strain on the engine but have not had that completely ruled out. The vibration isn't really noticeable while accelerating, really only when idling.

Any thoughts as to what could be causing the serious vibrations?

Are you in Raleigh?

Thanks BB12 and Coug! Hopefully it's on the cheaper end of things. This car is on its way out and I don't want to keep pumpin $$$ into this thing.

God, I miss Car Talk.

You guys are great but it's not the same. I haven't laughed once this entire thread.

Idler pulley(I'm pretty sure it's a serpentine system) or another pulley on alternator/ac compressor/steering pump/ maybe even harmonic balancer, is check with the cheapest one which would be the idler puller/tensioner pulley. Then go from there.

Take some white out and dab on a few areas of each pulley(with engine off) , have some one turn the steering wheel, watch for anything that may get out of line, try wd40 on the pulley that's noticeably out of balance, and if the vibrating stops you may have found your bad pulley, the alternator should be fine since its smaller.
Edit: there are bearings in the pulleys that will go bad.
God luck, it worked for me a few times to identify that problem pulley, go ahead and replace your belt to after you find what causes the vibrating.

If you feel it when stopped, in neutral, at idle, it can only be the bearings going out on a rotating engine component. Not wheel bearings, axle joints, differential.

Most likely the bearings on a pulley wheel the serpintine belt goes around. Idlers, Power steering pump, A/C compressor, water pump, fan, or possibly (but not likely) a bent crank sheave. Or, just the belt itself is wore out and and cupped.

Edit: Alternators tend to stand up to wear but they do go out. Heading to Destin, I sat on the interstate for hours in Birmingham waiting on a tow truck driver to finish his Father's Day meal and it was the alternator bearing.

My bet is power steering or water pump. Get a new belt anyway. If water pump and your coolant thermostat is under it, get a new thermostat also.

My power steering pump actually went out in the midst of this vibration going on. They put a new pump in and still vibrating harder than ever. You think it's just the belt?

Bumping this thread, hoping someone can help. I have an 05 Maxima 135k miles. Yesterday I took it out and it would not exceed 20 mph. No acceleration and basically nothing happened when I pressed on the gas. In park it revs fine. No check engine lights or anything are on.
I removed the mass air flow sensor and hit it with some cleaner, let it dry and put it back in. I reset the computer and it started, but still same issue. Parked it, then 10 minutes later decided I should move it over so we could get other cars out of the garage, but now it won't even start.
Any ideas?

<Edit...>

I'd take it and have the codes scanned.

You can google how to disable limp mode for your car... I had that happen once on an infinit and it was fine after a reset, but if something is wrong it will likely just go back into limp mode again.
