Professor Rob Hardin-Associate Professor UT Sports Management Program writes in today's Daily Times that Tennessee has signed 15 five star (Rivals) players since 2002.
The list includes: 1.James Banks, 2.Mondre Dickerson, 3.Brandon Jefferies, 4. J.T. Mapu, 5.Gerald Riggs, 6.Robert Meachem(All-American), 7. Jessie Mahelona(All-American), 8.Albert Toeaina, 9.Demetrice Morley, 10.Walter Fisher, 11.Eric Berry, 12.Chris Donald, 13.Ben Martin, 14.Kenny O'Neal, 15. Brent Vinson. The list represents varing degrees of success and or potential success....I think that most persons feel that the five star rating guarantees success.:dunno:

I'm not one of those persons...a 5* rating doesn't gaurantee anything! Just look at some of those names above.

Interesting that 6 of those guys are still on the roster but some fans think that UT has a serious talent deficit to the rest of the SEC.

Smokey... I'll admit that I'm hoping it will mean something when it comes to Berry, Morley, Vinson, Martin, and Donald.

Of the 8 that have moved on, 7 had significant contributing roles on the college level (I don't even remember Jefferies.) All of those that remain are expected to contribute in the near future.

Although it may not be a guarantee or NFL stardom, you can pretty well expect a 5* to be on the field, contributing in a major way sometime during his career. That list includes a guy who lead the team in receptions and receiving yards, a leading rusher, a very solid O-lineman, a short-stint NFL D-lineman, 2 all-americas, and a mormon (?). The real shame is that we didn't keep all of them around for their full careers, either due to early entry into the NFL or off-field issues.

Oh yeah...absolutely. I'm just saying that just because they are 5* coming out of highschool, that doesn't GAURANTEE they'll be superstar college players. Having said that, I'll take my chances recruiting 5* players anyday of the week and twice on Sunday.

...and Crompton was a 4* with Rivals.

Brandon Jefferies (2002) -- Jefferies only played in one game in two seasons at Tennessee and was set to transfer to North Carolina State. He eventually landed at Newberry College. He was tabbed the No. 2 offensive lineman prospect in the country coming out of high school but never materialized into a top-flight collegiate player.

:good!:

Kind of easy to see why I forgot him.

It is because we pay close attention to the five stars that flopped. All the other five stars succeeding we don't talk about.

Of course 5* doesn't mean guaranteed success..but for us general fans who can't see a player or send a guy to get a first-hand accoutn, IT IS what we will base our most informed opinions off of. I tdoesn't mean that it is bad when we take a 3*....but we as fans should always be happy when we land a 5* recruit. My opinion is look to see who else is recruiting a guy....if they are your rivals..then you probably want him.

TT; I agree with your position 100%. However, my point of starting the thread is, I am surprised that of the 15 five star players which the Vols have signed over the past six seasons, I would rate only about 50% of them as having been a positive(successful) contributor to the team for more than a single season. If I assign a one to five score to each player on the list (1-being a total waste of a scholarship, and 5-being All-American or potental AA); I come up with (3 players) with a score of five, (2 players) with a four, (3 players) with a score of 3, (5 players) with a 2 , and (2 players) with a score of 1. That was thought provoking for me.

It is interesting. But, how would those percentages run for other stars? It is sad that kids that probably do have a ton of talent don't always make it on the next level...often because of off-the-field issues. The fact is that recruiting classes are quite large...but the number of kids from each that really make a difference of the field is not nearly as large.

Greg Olsen played for Miami, not Notre Dame. Did he commit to the Irish at one point or something?

The stars are just giving a probability for future success. We do this all the time with hs kids-take the kid with a crazy high sat score-he may very well outperform the average sat score kid, or he might not. There are always exceptions-but generally the trends hold true.

He signed with N Dame (his brother had signed the eyar before with N Dame). His brother transferred to Virginia area school after hsi first year. N Dame released Greg and he signed with Miami

agree, 100%. The more higher ranked kids you get, the better chance to win championships
