Vols and a 1-3-1

With some of the crappy teams we play that's a bold statement. I see us probably playing 5 minutes or so in each of those games if they turn into a blow out. Then I do expect to see it against a couple better teams early on so CCM can see how they handle it.

We've got too good of post guys to play it too many minutes, but between foul trouble and needing to get guys a breather, I would expect to see it more than you're assuming.

I really dont see us using it much at all and definitely not in the games that really matter.

So if it's effective earlier in the year you see no chance we use it for a short stint against UK?

Not saying we do, I just think its very possible, and well see it in short spurts early in the year for a trial.

Maybe. But it's probably better to work on it and never need it than to need it and have never worked on it.

I don't think we will work on it much in practice or the games.....we will skim over it some I'm sure but when u r trying to be a dominant man to man team....zone isn't viewed as much of an option.....As for us trying a zone in italy.....we used it when we called off the dogs and were trying to play softer..we also asked them to keep the clock running that game bc the team we were playing was so overwhelmed.

I really don't see us using it much early in the yr and the first shot hit or offensive rebound given up....we will come out of the zone so fast it will make your head spin.

I agree with beast. I just don't think CCM will use it very much.

Again, maybe. But at least they will have worked on the basics if they see a matchup where the zone would be beneficial or if they have injuries or suspensions like last year. I don't expect Martin to just dump the man and go to a 1-3-1 but I wouldn't be shocked to see some of it early in the season against some lesser opponents just to try it on for size. I'm not saying it WILL happen just saying that if it does I won't be shocked to see it.

I agree with Zan. Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

I think Martin saw scenarios last year where a zone defense would have been beneficial, but since they had not practiced it, they were forced to stay with a man-to-man that wasn't working.

Is he going to go exclusively zone? Or even mostly zone? No, and you might not see it but in a handful of games. However, they will at least have it at their disposal, whereas they didn't last year.

I think we'll see a little more zone. Fairly confident more than 10 game minutes over the span of the season.

making the right change at the right time can win ball games. I think that having one available at certain times last year when we couldn't stop penetration "could have" won an extra game or two. Certainly hypothetical, but I also think CM realizes that he has to do what's needed to win each game, and one game a zone might be needed to tough out a W.

I remember the two of us being very outspoken about this last season, particularly over the first half of the season.

That's pretty much how I feel

1-3-1 was a staple in Coach Mears' day... Used to give the other teams fits. I think you need at least one zone in your bag of tricks. If you execute, you can't have too many weapons.
