This is pure speculation on my part after reading about and watching video of the first practice.
Butch seems to be doing what I heard happened under the Chip Kelly led Ducks. Practices are not only intense but you have to run not walk from station to station, onto and off of the field, plus he wants the team sprinting to their end of the field and off field at the end of quarters and during half times. This stamina level is why many teams playing Oregon can’t keep up with them. If the players execute this preparation, we may well give Oregon and everyone else a run for their money and more. I thus christen them the Vol herd.

Raijon Neal seems to be a weight room beast. I saw a little of the following last year but dare say he will be showing even more this season. He will be hard to drag down when tackled. He may well be similar if not as fast as Georgia’s Gurley and Alabama’s Yeldon. In short, what he might lack in speed and I don’t buy into his being all that slow, he will make up in breaking tackles and dragging defenders forward.

The only thing that causes me some concern right now is recruiting SEC talent. That Coleman kid may well be a fine pick up, But I hope to see us getting players from our southern states. This is not the ACC, Big East, or MAC. It’s the SEC.

Woods, you realize Neal is a 4.3 guy and possibly the fastest player on the team...His knock has always been how easy he is to tackle and lack of vision.

kind of like when Cut came back, he hustled the practices better than CPF....Neal has good speed, bad vision.....Coleman is a real fine prospect,,,,,talent all over the place, not just the south man, look at NFL rosters, and not all 5 stars

The Oregon players bought into Chip Kelly's little motto...

'Win Every Day!'

If Butch can get our guys to buy into that, we will see an improvement on the field this fall. Oregon is still going to smike them but at lease they could perhaps hang better with the SEC wannabe's...Florida, Vandy, Missouri, etc

Cut made a comment when he returned about how undisciplined the ol were..

I agree on Coleman. I give him an extra nod for playing basketball and baseball as well as football. Excelling in all 3 sports and maintaining a great gpa means something to me.

Lets not recruit any players from Ohio either. They are probably the 5th best football state but they aren't from the south

Weird people. A guy says he wants to see Butch recruit the unquestionable talent found in the SEC territory and a few of you somehow sees this as anti-north players. Weird but then again, this is VN so weirdness to be expected.

To the more sensible people: Regarding Neal, I think he was easy to tackle like Poole is that the scheme for the OL and the plays called set them up to be unproductive. Recall, the coach wanted our last year's RBs to run with violence. This usually means between the tackles and pretty much straight ahead. Which means right into the teeth of a defense. Works OK when the OL is really run blocking. But our OL was taught to focus on pass block as their primary duty. However, all the RBs, Young included did begin running with violence. Several times, I saw the strength of Neal displayed. I do think that Butch and company are going to have Neal and Lane both as dangerous backs not unlike the duos Bamma and GA had last season. Both will be hybrid bulls who have enough speed to make it genuine work to catch them and more work to drag them down to the ground. But we'll see.

Now, back to the weird guys. You were saying. . . ?

Neal is a wide receiver in a running back body

I do believe you got him pegged to a "T" or better yet a Power T. Will never forget that over the shoulder catch he made in that forgettable KY game 2 seasons ago.

Running with violence does not mean "dont use your vision". Once Neal made it past the los he never really made any moves that led to a big gainer. All the yards he earned were because of his speed and/or the ol. I dont know if he can learn to do this in his Sr. year... I hope he can.

You might be right. However, I think Butch is doing what should have been done with these players in the beginning. He's looking at their skill sets and coaching them to actually use it within a system designed for it. I believe he mentioned structuring his his strategy around the players' abilities and skills. I don't think Neal and several others were allowed to be what they are. Same thing with Poole. When he left, he did far better than he did while at the UT. It begs the question of why. Recall that Neal liked to seek getting around the edges but our line was not geared for that type of blocking and the WRs simply didn't block. So he didn't do well. It sound like Butch demands his WRs to block and do it effectively. In this setup, I'd expect Neal to be very good. It still doesn't answer your claim of his lack of vision but I honestly don't think he was allowed exhibit it by being what he is as a player. Once again, we'll see this year for sure, one way or the other.

im no trained eye but it looked to me like Neal makes cuts when he doesnt need to and runs into tackles when a cut would get him into open space.

Could be. I think differently and have an equally untrained eye. I think Neal was only a soldier. He was following orders. He did what he was told to do.

Seriously, orange parm, for all I know you could be right but if the Gator transplant serving as RB coach is even adequate, I think we're not going to be surprised, rather shocked at how productive our backs will be. The OL will likely jell even more despite the loss of Pittman. I think we will see them with a more nasty attitude when it comes to run blocking. The WRs will not get away with the half-azzed blocking of last season's guys. If the stamina stuff we're hearing is being built into even casual practices is happening, I think our backs will just wear down even good defenses. Those chains are going to move.

I also think that Butch sees the UT as his chance to build a serious legacy. The UT is in a major conference with topnotch competition. I think he wants to be known as a truly great coach and he couldn't have asked for a better place than the UT. This is his chance and I think he is going to go all out to make his dream come true. I just hope he doesn't drive himself 6 feet under with a heart attack in the process. We got a coach with an all or nothing attitude who doesn't know how to do anything else except drive drive, drive until he makes opponents roadkill. I think he's putting this attitude into players too, Neal included. This coming season will be Maximum Overdrive.

Lane is better....Neal rarely will hit the hole and just bounces it outside...Lane is a lot faster than people think and any doubts he had about his knee should be gone

I've heard people say this for two years now, but everytime he's given the chance he doesn't show it. And no he's not faster than people think. When he breaks one he gets ran down.

I think Neal will be a fine back next year. He improved the more he played last year. After he got hurt he was not the same.

It will be hard to replace Patterson, and the implementation of a new offense causes some concern. Tennessee has talent on offense. If Tennessee can get some defense, then Tennessee should have a good season.
