Vols at Volume?

I've heard people say this for two years now, but everytime he's given the chance he doesn't show it. And no he's not faster than people think. When he breaks one he gets ran down.

He had the 2 longest runs by a RB for us last year....not because of his speed but because he hits the hole....he didn't have game breaking speed last year but he is still plenty fast and Lane just runs harder than Neal...Neal doesn't fight for extra yards

And when did Dooley give him a chance? He had a fumble against Akron and barely seen the field if he did at all until the bama game where he ran pretty hard

So now you are basically going against your statement about Lane's speed? You're also ignoring the fact that Lane's yards came against the softer part of the schedule. Where as Neal's came against some pretty tough teams. And this theory that Neal doesn't hit the hole...LOL. He had issues against NC State bouncing outside. But he vastly improved his north south running as the season went on. Oh and don't forget Lane's fumbles. Also... Where would Neal be if Dooley didn't waste his sophomore season putting him at WR?

No I'm not going against what I said....i never said he was Percy harvin, I just said he's faster thank people think....and he had ONE fumble and the reason Neal had the carries against SEC teams is because Dooley wouldn't play him after ONE fumble

Uh no, the reason Neal had carries against the SEC teams is because he was the starter. He won the starting job fair and square. After the NC State game the competition was basically opened back up and Lane choked it away with an abysmal performance against Ga St. And after that Neal's performance continued to go up. Neal's best games were against UF, UGA, and he was destroying Miss St when he got injured. Lane's best games were against UK , Vandy, and Troy. Big big difference.

And I don't dislike Lane either. I think he and Neal are a fine duo and we need both of them. But I don't understand smashing Neal to justify Lane being better. When in fact, he's really done nothing on the field to prove he's better.

At the beginning of the season Neal didn't fight for extra yards, but as the year progressed I saw him breaking more and more tackles. I think a light bulb finally turned on. I don't remember who it was against, but I remember a play down on the 8 yard line where Neal powered his way through 3 or 4 defenders for a touchdown. The coaches recognize that Neal has the tools when he wants to put them together. But that is the question he needs to prove. Can he put it together?

This is pure speculation on my part after reading about and watching video of the first practice.
Butch seems to be doing what I heard happened under the Chip Kelly led Ducks. Practices are not only intense but you have to run not walk from station to station, onto and off of the field, plus he wants the team sprinting to their end of the field and off field at the end of quarters and during half times. This stamina level is why many teams playing Oregon can’t keep up with them. If the players execute this preparation, we may well give Oregon and everyone else a run for their money and more. I thus christen them the Vol herd.

Raijon Neal seems to be a weight room beast. I saw a little of the following last year but dare say he will be showing even more this season. He will be hard to drag down when tackled. He may well be similar if not as fast as Georgia’s Gurley and Alabama’s Yeldon. In short, what he might lack in speed and I don’t buy into his being all that slow, he will make up in breaking tackles and dragging defenders forward.

The only thing that causes me some concern right now is recruiting SEC talent. That Coleman kid may well be a fine pick up, But I hope to see us getting players from our southern states. This is not the ACC, Big East, or MAC. It’s the SEC.

You do know that there is SEC talent in non southern states, right?

Neal had some incredible runs inside the red zone last year. He must have been coached out of running with high knees as well because he had some nice moments going through the tackles with his knees up I am going to say three years ago now.

Being moved to WR his sophomore year was complete BS IMO. People don't give him enough credit. Going into the Miss St game (in which he was injured in) he was second in the SEC in rushing yards and 4th in the SEC in rushing ypg. And he was running really well against MSU until getting hurt.

I think that we need them both, but I like Lane better. He has some moves, but not straight line speed. Neal has speed, but not very shifty. Neither can seem to break a tackle.

Woods, you realize Neal is a 4.3 guy and possibly the fastest player on the team...His knock has always been how easy he is to tackle and lack of vision.

And we need to be pulling kids out of Virginia, NC, and South Carolina. Right along with Georgia and Tennessee.

Not bashing Neal, didn't say he was terrible, I just said Lane runs with more purpose, not just when we get in the red zone....like I said Dooley wouldn't give Lane a chance after Akron until Neal was hurt..... for God sakes I seen Young get PT over him during that stretch....they do compliment each other well I just think Lane is more of an every down back than Neal

I agree Neal fights for extra yards in the red zone and often gets them but we need a RB that will fight just as hard on our own 20 as they would on the goal line

Woodsman..you make a lot of good points that are well-thought out and intelligent, but I just can't seem to get through one of your long paragraphs without seeing that alien stare at me in my peripheral. Creepy. I'll be reading Marlin Lane this and Rajon Neal that and think, "Alien!" :alien:

The day Neal runs a 4.3 is the day I win the lottery.

He is a poor mans Doug Martin. That's who he reminds me of anyway, just too small man

Sorry about that, lockvol. I have a thing about extraterrestrials. I lived out west for so long where wide open spaces give you a big sky view. You see things in the sky night or day that are amazing.

Meteors streaking, fireballs, falling satellites, and various shaped vehicles obviously under intelligent control. Never saw an actual alien but did see USAF crafts that didn't become public knowledge until just before the first Gulf war. And USAF jets chasing geometric shaped vehicles at high and treetop altitudes.

Hovering lights, ground shaking noises late at night, red spheres that crashed into the ground but caused no explosion, left no debris, or crater. Lights that followed my car, wide and narrow bright beams that shined into my and neighbors' windows and. . .you get the idea. So the creepy alien is just a symbol of my experiences and I suppose desire to bump into an actual alien. Don't know what I'd do if I did. Knowing me, I'd probably be dumb enough to try to grab it. Maybe bring it to Neyland during a game to see if it had proper culture tastes for Vols football and stadium food. Might let it go if it gave me an anti-grav car to avoid traffic issues. Or a telepath helmet so I can figure out what makes my Shirley tick when she is having a "woman moment."

Will change avatars probably in a month or two. In the meantime just remember, "In space, no one can hear you scream."

I said this too. If he doesn't get hurt, he would had a monster break out game against Miss St. and we win that game. No way their run D would have kept him under 150 yards. Only way they stopped our run was when we had our fourth string (Q Watson) RB in.
