Vols Basketball

UL was a big team that badly out rebounded us. In the second half they got us to play a half-court game instead of the full-court game that we had going in the first and the offense wasn't the same. Free throw shooting wasn't good at all. More work needs to be done for the half-court offense.

Yeah, the half court offense wasn't the best. This team seems to be great at running, but they'll have to learn to run the half court offense, too.

Didn't see it but look forward to seeing this Vols team play.

As I've said before, I follow the UAB Blazers and their games are great to watch win or lose (mostly wins). The pressing and running when kids buy into it is a blast to watch.

I was at the game; the second half was pretty ugly. Major gut-check time for the Vols, after blowing a 20-point lead in the second half, but they pulled it out. The Vols just don't have the size; Lou-Laf was huge and outrebounded us by a nearly 20, if I recall correctly. They are a good team, hardly some preseason patsy, and they drained several three pointers in the second half. Big win for UT. Also, Wingate ended up starting, gimpy ankle and all, but clearly wasn't 100%. However, had he not played, I don't think we would have won the game. The crowd was decent, nothing like the ETSU game, but I was really happy with the way they rallied around the Vols when the game got tight in the second half. You could almost feel the team feeding off the crowd's enthusiasm down the stretch. Watson made a critical three-pointer while getting fouled and made the free throw for a rare four-point play; that was HUGE. EKU and Murray St. will be tough; I still think, though, that UT will pull off at least one big upset this season. It's a shame Jemere Hendrix turned out to be such a thug; I think Pearl could have whipped his butt into shape and made him into a valuable post presence. I'm not sure Wingate is ever going to become the force in the paint that he needs to be. I continue to be impressed with this team's hustle and grit, particularly the much-maligned Bradshaw.

From what I heard on the radio, Wingate was a beast early even on his gimpy wheel... and Dane played much better than he did against ETSU. The team really laid it on them early, as seen by the 21 pt lead... but barely avoided the second half meltdown that was a staple of the Buzz Peterson era. We just don't have the depth... maybe the hype around Pearl, and having players like Watson and Lofton will attract some post players, and a little depth. It also sounded like Childress sucked tonight, especially compared to his play against ETSU.

I like to say the same thing about Bradshaw, but he's had his moments.

People can say what they want about Bradshaw but that guy hustles.

Childress is getting some playing time, I think, only because he's a big, wide body in the paint and Pearl is desperate for post players. He looks pretty lost out there, but he's a freshman, so the jury's still out. I doubt he'll ever amount to much more than a "role player," though.
Bradshaw actually had a better game against ETSU (a double-double), but then again, so did the whole team. It's asking a lot for a guy who's 6'4" to guard guys who are 6'9", 6'10". The offense functions much better when Watson's running the point.

Glad to see everyone is recognizing Childress isn't going to be a major contibutor. After ETSU, some folks on this board were acting like the guy was the second coming of Kevin McHale.

Hey, if you counted turnovers, Dane had a triple double!

Childress does alright, but you can tell he's still on the learning curve, trying to stay with the pace of a real game. I think he'll be a fine player once he builds some confidence.

All the confidence in the world won't make him run faster or jump higher.

He sucks but we need him because of lack of depth.

I agree. He would be a sloid player at UWM, he's just over his head at this level. In his defense, he does give all he has.

I'm no Bradshaw fan but he is the kind of player that gives and gets 110% from himself it's just that 110% is unimpressive. :boredom:

Childress is going to have to play, and hopefully he will improve as the season goes on. (or at least do something other than rack up fouls at the rate of one per minute!) We really need him to play defense and grab some rebounds more than we need him to be a scorer, but allegedly the strength of his game is a deft shooting touch for a guy his size. Other than him, UT has two post players (Wingate and Patterson), neither of whom are at 100% right now (due to Wingate's gimpy ankle and Patterson's suspension and resulting conditioning issues). Both of those guys looked REALLY gassed late in the second half of last night's game.

What's really tough on Pearl is that one injury to pretty much ANYBODY that plays and they're screwed. They're basically rotating seven guys (Patterson, Wingate, Watson, Lofton, Asumnu, Bradshaw, and JuJuan Smith, who has yet to show me much of anything excpet some good quickness), with Childress coming in only to give the big guys a breather, and the occasional appearance of Jordan Howell (talk about guys who haven't shown anything... I thought he was supposed to be this incredible 3-point gunner?? He's laid enough bricks to build a new arena, and looks even more lost out there than Childress.) That being said, I think Pearl did a tremdendous job of shuffling guys in and out last night to try to keep the freshest legs on the floor when La-Laf made their run at us. Watson and Lofton had just enough left in the tank down the stretch to win the game for us.
