Vols' DL driven to exceed expectations

Question is, do guys like O'Brien, Jordan Williams and the other DTs have enough physical ability for the chip on the shoulders to matter?

Not sure. Even with their star ranking coming out of high school, I don't think anyone of the 2 deep would get much playing time at most SEC schools.

And I have heard this, nothing is ever good enough junk since I became a UT fan..

Winning the east every 2-3 years and going to the SEC championship wasn't good enough.

Averaging 10 wins a year wasn't good enough.

Well now we have had how many LOSING seasons in a row and our fan base is praying we even make it to a bowl game this year.

And these same people who nothing is ever good enough for, still say firing CPF was the right move.. they still say nothing is good enough, and are already making a case to go coach searching again.

Thanks but no thanks.. all of you who are tired of hearing about how we are getting better.. and just want to "win now, no more excuses".

Go follow a different team that does not have to dig themselves out of a hole that you put them in, in the first place.

Because the winningest coach in CFB wasn't good enough.

You mad, bro?

Amen!
Been saying this since the day he left and kigfin came in. Had he stayed we would have won the sec a few years later I believe. Classic case of the inmates ruling the asylum

Sorry for the rant but here it goes...

Look, I was glad that Fulmer was our coach and now I am glad that he's not. It's easy to look back now and have revisionist history towards CPF considering how bad we've screwed our program up since coach Fulmer was fired. However that doesn't change the status of our program at the time and where it was clearly heading at the end of Fulmer's tenure.

Even before the disasterous 2008 season, From 2002-2007 Fulmer had turned this program into what I would consider "upper class mediocrity." Yes we made it to a couple of SEC Championship appearances. However if you look at how we were competing with the upper echelon of the SEC during that time, you'd see that Fulmer's program was getting left behind. Even in 2007 when we represented the East in the SEC Championship game, we were embarassed by Florida 59-20 and Alabama 41-17. Not to mention some of the absolutely horrendous bowl game performances aganst teams like Kansas State, Maryland, Clemson, Penn State, etc. Our teams had some talent, but we were soft. We were undisciplined. We lacked focus. I will NEVER forget that 2008 South Carolina game, losing 27-6 and seeing some of our players on the sidelines laughing and cutting up and this was all on national television! Once I saw that, I had had enough and I knew Fulmer had lost his team.

So while I understand the temptation to lament losing CPF considering the current status of our program, don't equate his firing with how ****ty our program has been the last 7 years. You can blame that directly on Mr. Mike Hamilton and his poor decisioning on who to hire for his replacment.

You mad, bro?

This is probably what he is mad about.

Under Fulmer (1993-2008)

10-5-1 vs. Alabama 65.6% (winning %)
3-4 vs. Auburn 42.9%
10-6 vs. Georgia 62.5%
14-2 vs. South Carolina 87.5%
4-12 vs. Florida 25%
3-4 vs. LSU 42.9%

Since Fulmer (2009-present)

0-5 vs. Alabama 0%
0-2 vs. Auburn 0%
1-4 vs. Georgia 20%
2-3 vs. South Carolina 40%
0-5 vs. Florida 0%
0-2 vs. LSU 0%

Im confused as to what point your trying to make, my post was about the insta gratification crowd that think we can magically go to winning championships immediately without walking the path it takes to get there..

It doesn't work that way, and just continues the rest of the country laughing at us.. it started when we fired CPF and hasn't stopped since.. and posts like those are why.

What your talking about I don't know, but I never said we didn't also have the best most passionate fans either. The numbers we turn out despite performance is amazing.

But we need to marry the two... have some patience to give Jones the time he needs, without idiots starting fire coach websites and blasting social media with complete junk..and yet still be passionate enough to fill the stands while we wait for greatness to happen.

I must have misunderstood what you were saying. Got defensive because of some attacks lately on UT's fandom from media and our own fans. Apologies. :hi:

Fulmer was heading downhill. He's a legend and should be treated as such, but firing him wasn't the biggest reason the program has fallen apart. His replacements can be blamed for that.

I've been cheering for the vols since I was a kid and Johnny Majors was a coach. i sat in the pouring rain under the 0 at Fulmer's 1st game as HC. My user name is a fricking reference to a crap coach I tried to "support". You can kiss my ass on assuming anything about my previous post.

My statement that the players who are saying they are using talk of them being worst in the SEC as fuel should actually back it up is in no way shape or form related to instant gratification. Talk the talk, walk the walk.

Along with staying healthy (critical for this team to succeed), stopping the run is my BIGGEST concern for Team 118.

In the past two seasons, we gave up 50 rushing touchdowns! In contrast, we only gave up 38 rushing touchdowns in the six seasons from 1996 to 2001! Only 3 rushing touchdowns in 1999!

That kind of rushing defense seems unimaginable for us now, and is certainly unrealistic (at least for a couple more years). However, as recently as 2008, we only gave up 6 rushing touchdowns. If we can get that number down around 15 or so, and have at least moderate success at QB (which I think we will), we will surprise some teams (and naysayers) this season!

Go Vols!!!

How this thread deteriorated to Fulmer/Hamilton from O'Brien's comments on the D-line this season is mind numbing. Let it go people.

I like where the d-line is compared to the last season. Last season they were using guys that had proven they could not get it done at a high level. At least this season they have different players with some good upside with strong reinforcements on the way next season. If playing with a chip on your shoulder helps you to try harder and give extra - crank the chippers up and have at it.

Hope our problem with the DL of getting off blocks has improved this year. It was so frustrating to see the guy there only to get blocked out of the play.

with the lack of size in the middle, power teams could gash that line badly. Look for improved pass rush but they will have to prove that they can stop the run up the gut. I sure hope they can but I'm not optimistic.

Obrien definitely does. I've been hearing he's the most consistent dlineman we have. Bama came hard after him so here's hoping he can play up to his recruiting ranks
