Vols fans- expectations for next season?

If Goins plays as he did the final four games of the season, things should be fine. If he's the player he was for the majority of the season, Tennessee is up Shat Creek.

We all saw the improvement of Maze from his first year to his second.

Why is it crazy to assume Melgo can't improve as well? He is already a MUCH better defender than Maze ever was and finished this past season playing much better basketball than Maze did his 1st year here.

He had the same issues this season that Maze had last year, which is completely normal for a kid stepping up to this level out of Juco.

Why does everyone ignore the fact Maze and Goins both played at the D-I level before they went to junior college?

Maze at OU I'll give you, but didn't Goins play at Ball State?

Its a bit of a step up from Ball State/Juco to big boy basketball where you are asked to guard guys like Downey, Wall, Fortson, etc.

My thoughts exactly. With the SEC likely taking a step back as a whole next year, they should be right in the thick of the conference race, but Melvin Goins is going to have to take a miracle leap forward to expect too much in March

Emain how are you measuring the sec taking a step back? Less ooc victories? Lower conference rpi? Less victories as a conference in the ncaa tournament? Let's go ahead and get your prediction out with specificity...

With the overwhelming strength of the SEC next season, we'll be lucky to have a .500 conference record. South Carolina will rule and the SEC will be considered the top conference in the country. If you don't believe me, just read MHF's posts. Everyone in the conference will be improved next season and we'll likely have 10 teams make the tournament.

You can try to make things up from whole cloth or you could try to accurately predict which teams will be worse next year. You already said south carolina. The conference will be mediocre also right?

The SEC will be better this next season as a conference than it was this year. South carolina will not collapse without devan downey.

It is funny how clear it is that some people on here do not follow recruiting at all or realize what a difference freshmen can make. I really should dig up my recruiting thread so I can laugh at the idiot who said uk would not end up with a great class.

OK, MHF, the west will still be the west--no quality teams there. KY will be worse, but still have a good team. TN will be worse, but still have a good team. FLA has a chance to be better, as does GA. Vandy will be worse. The conference as a whole will be worse than this year, because there are no teams that will reach the quality of KY, TN, and Vandy of this year. So, you like predictions, there they are. As I said previously, there is no logical basis for your continued touting of the SEC as one of the best conferences. Try using logic to explain your predictions.

Assuming (fairly safely) Goins is the starter next year, do we know who is going to be backing him up?

Josh Bone was servicable at times this year. Plus we have some freshman who could steal minutes as the season progresses...

I think I have been pretty clear on how I think the conference will play out. The bottom will get slightly better, the middle will remain about the same, and the top will take a big step back. All of that = a step back as a whole. I don't know why I need to be anymore specific. We all know what kind of players teams in the SEC have lost. That should be enough to realize that this year won't be good, but the additions should set up nicely for the SEC to improve greatly next year.

Exactly. The only teams that can really be thinking about great improvement next year are teams that will still be lucky to be on the bubble anyway.
