I believe we played Pacific in 89 or 90. :banghead:
The I-A and I-AA designation did not begin until the 1977 season.
Pacific was Divison I-A until it discontinued football after the 1995 season.
Akron moved up to division I-A in 1987. Therefore, the 1989 contest was between I-A schools.
However,.... these are the only two I-AA schools (had to be I-AA when the game was played) that I found that the Vols have EVER played.
The Vols played Wichita State in 1981. They are a member of the Missouri Valley Conference. The MVC quit football in the mid 80's and so did the Shockers. This was back in the days when the SEC schedule was only 6 games. The 5 non-conference opponents that season were: #5 Southern Cal, Colorado State, Ga Tech, Memphis State, and Wichita State.
The Vols played The Citadel in 1983. They still play in I-AA in the Southern Conference. The 5 non-conference opponents that season were: Pittsburgh, New Mexico, The Citadel, Ga Tech, and Rutgers.
