Redshirt freshman Jonathan Crompton completed 10-of-16 passes for 106 yards with three TDs
March 11, 2006
Tennessee held its first full scrimmage of the spring Saturday and, despite youthful displays throughout the afternoon, made a positive impression on its head football coach.
"I think this was a great first scrimmage for us," Phillip Fulmer said. "We're really a green and growing football team and that's the best way I can say it. If we're replacing six of the seven guys on the defensive front, obviously there are some good things with the new guys. But if you give up those big plays on defense, it will get you beat."
One of those big plays was a 64-yard scamper by senior Cory Anderson on his first carry of the afternoon. The breakaway run from a one-back set led to an Anderson 1-yard TD plunge three plays later.
Junior Erik Ainge got the starting nod at quarterback and responded with a 14-of-23 performance for 178 yards and a touchdown. Fulmer said Ainge displayed good knowledge of the offense during his time behind center.
"Erik (Ainge) is comfortable in the huddle and is throwing the ball with some real velocity," Fulmer said. "David (Cutcliffe) has done a good job correcting some of the fundamental things. He managed the clock very well and we saw things you look for in a veteran quarterback. He's played a lot of football and I thought he took a good step today."
Ainge's longest completion was 44 yards for a touchdown to Robert Meachem, who caught 5 passes for 66 yards. Casey Woods added four catches for 47 yards and a score, while Lucas Taylor, Bill Grimes, Slick Shelley and Ja'Kouri Williams had three grabs apiece.
"The offense coaches have taken the challenge," Fulmer said. "Our defense always has had great temperament but the offensive coaches with David and those two youngsters, Matt (Luke) and Kurt (Roper), and Coach (Greg) Adkins always has been a "get-after-your-rear" guy. They bring a little bit of an attitude to offensive football. And that's what you want, a defensive mentality playing offense. We're a little closer to that."
Defensively, youngsters Adam Myers-White and Walter Fisher made good impressions with each contributing a sack and another tackle for loss. Myers-White had four tackles from the linebacker position, while Fisher added his two stops at defensive end.
Marsalous Johnson led the way with nine tackles, with Dan Williams and Jonathan Wade in on seven stops apiece. Demonte Bolden forced the game's only fumble.
"It will be good film study for us. I'm glad to see us moving around rather crisply and not having any quarterback-center exchange problems that are typical of the first scrimmage of the spring. There were some good plays on offense and some things that will get you beat.
"In the two-minute drill, we tested them pretty well with the clock set at 1:10 with one timeout and they had to score a touchdown. The ones were able to do that and the second group we had plenty of looks with. The second group had about 65 plays or so and they need about 165 every time we're out there."
Redshirt freshman Jonathan Crompton was effective, completing 10-of-16 passes for 106 yards. He threw for three touchdowns in all, including a pair of short-yardage touchdowns, and ran another across from the 7-yard line. Junior Bo Hardegree added 13 completions in 19 attempts for 87 yards and TD pass to Shelley.
Tennessee has practices scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday before taking 10 days off for spring break.
