Redshirt freshman Jonathan Crompton completed 10-of-16 passes for 106 yards with three TDs

March 11, 2006

Tennessee held its first full scrimmage of the spring Saturday and, despite youthful displays throughout the afternoon, made a positive impression on its head football coach.

"I think this was a great first scrimmage for us," Phillip Fulmer said. "We're really a green and growing football team and that's the best way I can say it. If we're replacing six of the seven guys on the defensive front, obviously there are some good things with the new guys. But if you give up those big plays on defense, it will get you beat."

One of those big plays was a 64-yard scamper by senior Cory Anderson on his first carry of the afternoon. The breakaway run from a one-back set led to an Anderson 1-yard TD plunge three plays later.

Junior Erik Ainge got the starting nod at quarterback and responded with a 14-of-23 performance for 178 yards and a touchdown. Fulmer said Ainge displayed good knowledge of the offense during his time behind center.

"Erik (Ainge) is comfortable in the huddle and is throwing the ball with some real velocity," Fulmer said. "David (Cutcliffe) has done a good job correcting some of the fundamental things. He managed the clock very well and we saw things you look for in a veteran quarterback. He's played a lot of football and I thought he took a good step today."

Ainge's longest completion was 44 yards for a touchdown to Robert Meachem, who caught 5 passes for 66 yards. Casey Woods added four catches for 47 yards and a score, while Lucas Taylor, Bill Grimes, Slick Shelley and Ja'Kouri Williams had three grabs apiece.

"The offense coaches have taken the challenge," Fulmer said. "Our defense always has had great temperament but the offensive coaches with David and those two youngsters, Matt (Luke) and Kurt (Roper), and Coach (Greg) Adkins always has been a "get-after-your-rear" guy. They bring a little bit of an attitude to offensive football. And that's what you want, a defensive mentality playing offense. We're a little closer to that."

Defensively, youngsters Adam Myers-White and Walter Fisher made good impressions with each contributing a sack and another tackle for loss. Myers-White had four tackles from the linebacker position, while Fisher added his two stops at defensive end.

Marsalous Johnson led the way with nine tackles, with Dan Williams and Jonathan Wade in on seven stops apiece. Demonte Bolden forced the game's only fumble.

"It will be good film study for us. I'm glad to see us moving around rather crisply and not having any quarterback-center exchange problems that are typical of the first scrimmage of the spring. There were some good plays on offense and some things that will get you beat.

"In the two-minute drill, we tested them pretty well with the clock set at 1:10 with one timeout and they had to score a touchdown. The ones were able to do that and the second group we had plenty of looks with. The second group had about 65 plays or so and they need about 165 every time we're out there."

Redshirt freshman Jonathan Crompton was effective, completing 10-of-16 passes for 106 yards. He threw for three touchdowns in all, including a pair of short-yardage touchdowns, and ran another across from the 7-yard line. Junior Bo Hardegree added 13 completions in 19 attempts for 87 yards and TD pass to Shelley.

Tennessee has practices scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday before taking 10 days off for spring break.

Everyone be sure to check out the highlight video at the top of the article too.

Anderson broke off a big run, Ainge is stepping into his throws and making good passes along with Crompton.

Looked like a pretty good first scrimmage.

This is probably the funniest quote from Fulmer yet. I found this in another article about the scrimmage...

Fulmer was heard easily and often as he chided his offensive line. At one point Fulmer yelled, "You look like an old woman," to one of his projected starters.

"We're not very mean upfront yet," Fulmer said. "It just looks like two butterflies making love out there to be honest with you."

Good post. Looks like Crompton is fully back from surgery and ready to challenge for the starting job. If Ainge doesn't show himself to be significantly better I think he will get the nod.

All the coaches seemed farily happy with what they saw and got accomplished for the first scrimmage.

Brent Hubbs said Ainge looked as good and as confident as has ever saw him look. Crompton had a nice day, as did Bo Hardegree. He said the coaches are definitely optmistic about their starting five on the offenisve line. Coach Adkins seemed please in his comments about the practice, as did Coach Cutcliffe and Coach Fulmer. Coach Chavis says he is pleased with where his defense is right now, etc.

Appears to have been a very good scrimmage for the most part. Hate that Vlad is out with a likely out with a broken ankle or whatever.

If it's anything like the past springs, there will be more where that came from.

I'm glad they started off with a positive scrimmage. I think that's a big first step to getting back in it.

Ainge looked very good today and Coach Cutcliffe has already said that Ainge is "firmly" in the #1 spot at QB and that Crompton and Hardegree will split sencond team reps. I will be extremely surprised if Ainge isn't starting in the game against Cal.

Just tp point out. I think three of his touchdowns were in goal-line drills that he came in and got some work at.

I could careless who wins the job. I want the guy that gives us the best chance to win ball games out there. I personally think that will be Erik Ainge this year and as of right now, Ainge is clearly the #1 QB on the depth chart.

Man, I hope it isn't like past springs on the injury front, OWB. We have to be due to have a good year in that area....don't we. It seems like we are reading about major injuries every year. Hopefully Vlad is the only guy we lose for the rest of the spring. That really sucks and puts him behind in his development.

As they say, there will always be injuries, but we certainly have had our fair share the past few years. I think that last year they were protecting against injuries some and we all know how that turned out, especially with our receivers.

That really is a bummer about Vlad though, hope he can get through it and bounce back quickly.

This is exciting.

Don't get too excited. UT's coaches were saying that we were going to be great during Spring practice last year too.

sounding good so far, our qbs need to keep the right mind and keep working harder to get better, wide recievors need to focuz and start catching also

No coach said that we were going to be great this season. They said that it was a great scrimmage.

I think #15 is Casey Woods

Well, Casey Woods is #85, I think. Plus, he's white. Also, he's a wide receiver, and offense usually wears orange. So my guess is the pictured dude is one of our defensive backs. Pretty good hands for a DB, maybe we'll see a few more picks this year. (Made by us, not our opponents).

That's the most encouraging thing I've seen in a long time. While my feelings about Fulmer as a head coach are well known, I have never doubted his ability as an O-Line coach. Hopefully, he will remain hands on throughout the season.

Looks like a good first step to getting back to winning football games. Hopefully the o-line can get it together. Is Aaron Sears out of spring practice?

It isn't a matter of the o-line getting it together. It is a matter of the Coaches teaching the o-line what & how to do. We've not had an SEC grade o-line performance since NC. I have been highly disappointed that Fulmer personally did not take over the line. JRS certainly was clueless, why he wasn't fired long ago has to be found in some photos he has.

I am excited to see that they moved Myers-White to linebacker and Robert Ayers to DE. According to Scout those two were very disruptive in their new positions.
