I'm impressed and happy with how much better our D has gotten in just 1 year.

With so much youth already playing and the talent still learning our D will get much better over the next year or 2.

That stat and ranking is excellent and I'm happy for our kids on D.

I think what the person meant that said it's misleading is that when teams get a 1st down in only 2 plays that stat doesn't reflect those plays.

What's most important is that by next year or the year after our Vols D is going to be very hard to move the ball on and score.

It's coming folks, won't be much longer and the old fear of having to play our Vols will be back in full force.

I am guessing he is saying it is deceiving because the opposing offence can still have a high number of first downs or scores because your not stopping them and making it to third down often. It would make sense that you need to take the total number of first downs into account when looking at that stat.....

Please understand I am in no way saying this is the case for us. Haven't really even payed close enough attention to the numbers. I am only commenting on why he called it a deceiving stat.

I could agree with this except......They were 3 for 12 on third down. 3 for 13 if you count the failed 4th down attempt.

They also only had 3 more 1st downs than we did and our offense was better on third down by 10% with more third down attempts.

Actually, the more you dissect the stats.....there is a lot of good for them to take from this game over the next two weeks.

A lot of bad too, but I'm a glass half full kind of guy I guess.

Wow. Minus AJ, the defense will be all around better next year too. Also, minus Worley we aren't going to miss a lot of offensive players either.

Does Pearson stay? If Pig shows out (who knows) will he stay?

Remember we have P. Williams coming in next year too.

Tennessee is tied with Virginia Tech at 3rd place in FBS in 3rd down conversion defense. Oklahoma only converted 3 of 12 third downs against the Vols! Our defense is only allowing 23.3% of third downs to become first downs. Oklahoma did not have a sustained drive rushing the football against our defense.
Let's put a little more significance to this. This Vol defense has only allowed the three teams it has played to convert a third down into a first down 10 out of 43 attempts. PS A little side note. Keith Ford, the guy who killed the Vols inthe Oklahoma game is out with an injury for the West Virginia game.

There are no juniors currently at UT with enough talent to consider turning pro early. Doesn't mean they won't get bad advise and try it.

Pearson and Randolph (possibly Maggitt if he regains his pre-injury form) are the only juniors I could see being drafted after their senior seasons. OW maybe, but he's very short for an NFL DL.

Big improvement from the past years. Suddenly our defense isn't the eye sore it was. Now only if that O-Line can come together...

We really moved the ball well, we just have to improve in the redzone and eliminate the turnovers.

I believe the 3 for 12 is counting the third down attempt on the drive they attempted the fourth down. Since not having a successful 3rd down is the reason you are playing on fourth down. In short you're saying 10 drives were stopped. (Disregarding turnovers)

That is a good example and I agree one could infer that is a large percentage of the possessions but the number of total possessions is extremely important there. Not many lone stats should be looked upon and praised. Especially not this one.

Keep in mind as I said before I am not referring to UT and how the stat describes their play. I believe it is obvious that my original comment was an addition to someone who simply typed "deceiving stat". Everyone was asking how that stat can be deceiving. I am not sure everyone understands I am just discussing the stat in general but I have faith everyone has the ability to.

Pearson's gonna stay... if he's fortunate health wise he's only gonna probably play in 8-9 games this year, not enough of a body of work to get the type of draft grade he'd need to leave early IMHO.

Pig's an undersized WR averaging 7.5 yards per catch for his career ... where's he gonna go?
