Vols Ranked #10 in AP POll

Some of you guys need to burn your orange and buy you a bunch of blue. Geez why don't you just get down on your knees to the great and mighty KY. This board needs to be merged with catspause. Vol Nation, what a joke.
Trust me, nobody's mandating you be here. None of us will miss you if you exit and never return.

He's not anymore scary than Rose was. We did fine containing him.

#10 is a little high for us though, for sure.

Our guard play isn't nearly as good as it was back then. Also, UK's post play should be at least as good as that Memphis team. Patterson and Cousins will be a load on the inside.

Get over yourself. I want UT to win as much as anybody. That said, I have very good reasons to worry about UK this year.

Kentucky's post play on the offensive end will be light years better than that Memphis team's.

Look at their roster this year and then come back and say they don't deserve their ranking.

Yes they have talent...talent that's yet to play a college basketball game! True basketball is one of the few sports where you can come in right away and hold your own fairly well, but I just don't see them doing it right away. I watched their Blue/White game last nite and it looked like their starters could end up being Patterson, Dodson, Orton, Bledsoe, and Wall. Thats 3 true freshmen and a ju-co transfer who have never been in the pressure situation that is UK basketball. However, with games against UNC, IU, L'Ville, etc. early on, they could be clicking by the time they get to SEC play. Still, I'll take a veteran team who knows what its like to be in the Top 5, what it takes to get outta the first round of the SEC tourney and actually reach the NCAA's anyday over talented freshmen.

Why, because they (correctly) believe that Kentucky will be good this year? Gimme a break.

Good news is nationally there is alot of expectations for both UT and UK....I really hope we are ready this year for it. Alot is obviously expected of UK and that is good for the SEC and UT. Our game will get tons of national exposure. Go Vols.

allvol9's comment about "good for the SEC" got me to thinking. If you break down the top 25 - it looks like this:

  • Big Ten --> 6
    Big East --> 5
    ACC --> 4
    Big 12 --> 3
    SEC --> 3

I'm a little surprised the Big 10 has 6 teams in the top 25. Thoughts?

Look at the 6 teams. Tell me who doesn't belong.

I don't know why I'm so down on this team, but I don't think we should crack the top 15. It's not that I can even identify which teams should be above us...I just generally feel like the answer is 'a lot of them.'

Oh well...I hope they deserve that ranking...we'll see soon enough. I just wish we had a PG and a better 3 pt threat.

Michigan State, Purdue, Michigan and Ohio State without question. I'm not exactly sold on Illinois and Minnesota yet. I guess I'm just getting hung up on half their conference occupying the top 25 spots.

Illinois and Minnesota both made the NCAA Tournament last year, return alll of their significant players, and add multiple top 100 recruits. Why wouldn't they be in the Top 25?

Yes - I see what you mean. Add to that both are well coached.

What about the Big 12 - 2 teams in the top 3 but only 3 in the top 25. Is there that much drop off in that conference or are they potentially undervalued at this point?

I'm sorry, I must have missed those two butt kickings we put on Big Blue last year....oh wait, we were embarassed twice by their worst team in forever.

Tyler Smith's play will determine how far we advance in the tourney. It will also open up some opportunities for other players to produce big numbers this year.

His stats from last year are the reason we received such a high preseason ranking. Right now, we are perceived as a a one-man team.

Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, and Missouri will all be good. One or more of them will be in the polls before long.

Will anyone on our team be able to guard John Wall? That matchup scares the heck out of me...

Can John Wall dominate college players like he did in high school? Probably not. It will take time. Kentucky is a very young team.

The PG spot will absolutely be the determinant. We are plenty good at every other spot to compete. Competent guard play and effort on D, we can play with just about anyone.

We have the talent and experience to get to the Elite 8. We'll see if this team can put it together or not.

Those who think Wall will not be a ridiculous talent are kidding themsleves. He's Derrick Rose, Tyreke Evans good, there's no question. The deal with Kentucky, to me will be the question of chemistry, particularly how two NBA-talent posts that don't really fit a DD offense will like playing on the weak side to open space up for penetrating guards. I'm not sure how Patterson will fit into their plans as a traditional back to the basket post player. Cousins, on the other hand, has some attitude questions and could be an issue when he's playing for put backs and garbage baskets.

So, yes, the Wildcats are extremely talented, but they have a lot of new, young faces and egos to assauge. People may look to the Fab Five, but those guys had excellent chemistry together (and so-so with the other players), played different positions and in a traditional offense that wasn't set up to allow the guards to dominate.
