DeSean Bishop’s physicality was display here. He seems motivated to end spring hot after Peyton Lewis had a pretty good scrimmage on Monday. Both of those guys are playing well here at the end and are options 1A (Bishop) and 1B (Lewis) – just as we all assumed it would be. I think Bishop is carrying himself differently right now. He’s the clear-cut leader of the group and it is not even close.
The offensive line worked in groups before linking up with the defensive line for some 1-on-1 pass-rush drills. We were leaving during this time, but the one rep I saw was Lance Heard winning over Tyree Weathersby.
Mike Matthews continues to look good this spring, making a couple of nice catches on great routes this morning. Braylon Staley was back to work today for the first time in about a week. His routes were crisp, and he made several catches. We will see if he plays on Saturday, but he didn’t appear too limited while the media was present.
Radarius Jackson and Amari Jefferson were both getting some individual coaching at times from some GAs. Chris Brazzell had a good period in routes on air, working back to the football and high-pointing the catch.

Tennessee’s quarterbacks and running backs worked on some red zone routes, particularly Texas routes. That was a pretty crisp portion of practice with only a few passes hitting the ground. After working on routes, Tennessee’s running backs did some pass protection work.
The Vols’ quarterbacks, receivers and tight ends then did their routes on air portion of practice in the red zone. Nico Iamaleava was accurate throwing the football but his pass catchers didn’t help him out on a few reps. Tight end Ethan Davis had a bad drop on a fade route while Braylon Staley was unable to get to a fade that landed on the back pylon.
Chris Brazzell had one really nice catch on a throw behind him on an in route though it was one that probably doesn’t get completed in a game. Tennessee was working on some double move in routes that was executed pretty well. Backup quarterback Jake Merklinger had a nice day throwing the football and was sharp throughout the session.
Loftin, Hobbs, and Dye all participated in that drill despite not being full dressed out. Outside linebacker coach Levorn “Chop” Harbin provided some extra instructions for Dye between reps.

Before heading outside, the quarterbacks worked on some red-zone passing routes with the running backs, who ran some corner routes to the short side of the field. It was very hit-and-miss with some drops and errant throws and routes and ball placement that could have been better. Bishop did make a nice catch before crashing into some pads against the wall in the corner of the practice field.
Pope was fired up by a Matthews route and catch on one rep, and Staley looked crisp on a couple of his reps working the middle of the field. Alec Abeln liked what he saw from tight ends Ethan Davis and freshman Jack Van Dorselaer on their routes. Brame bobbled a pass before double-catching it.
Nico Iamaleava was the sharpest of the quarterbacks in the period we watched.

Running back order was DeSean bishop, Peyton Lewis, Justin Baker, Star Thomas, Hunter Barnes. Daune Morris was out today.
Nico Iamaleava had two nice throws in the RB throwing drill, well placed at that back pylon. Jake Merklinger missed both throws I saw. George MacIntyre completed his throw.
Jake Merklinger looked better as practice went on but didn't have his best day.
George MacIntyre did fine.
Travis Smith Jr. is a great route runner for how young he is.

Ok I admit I’m not an expert but what is a Texas route?

Think I would remember if I’d heard of that before..

Attacks a defense by combining a deep route from the tight end or receiver with a shorter angle route by the running back, creating a stress point on the middle linebacker.

Thanks fingers.

#70 has some bend, and will be good.

Jamariyon Dye didnt look too interested. Hope he gets to work out in pads. Looking for him to do big things.

Not a huge deal, but this is practice 12. I think they do a walk thru on Friday which would be 13 and the O+W game would be 14. pretty sure you get 15; anyone know why we don't use that extra practice? Just curious or if I'm missing something. I obviously have too much time on my hands.

"Nico Iamaleava had two nice throws in the RB throwing drill, well placed at that back pylon."

Oh, no wonder he wants to renegotiate his contract.
