Vols Spring Practice #5

Seems to me these players we are bringing in now are head and shoulders above what we brought in with other regimes.

I’m trying to stay grounded but it’s difficult, guess having a real coach helps!!
Yeah, me too! I keep trying to remind myself that we're always excited and encouraged this time of year.
And, yep, we have plenty of good, objective reasons to feel excited and encouraged this spring.

I think between Small, Wright, and Sampson, Small needs to be getting the least touches this season. He’s a solid running back but the other two are more talented

He's a senior this year. Money year for him.
You thinking transfer portal for him?

Yes some speedy guys will be great threats to use. However, keep in mind that since we go up-tempo and do do not substitute, a lot of these new comers won't see the field until they have the full playbook down or garbage time.
I agree, I just meant a guy like Seldon that can line up in the backfield or out wide

It’s interesting to see if Keyton will be the next consistent breakout player at WR following Tillman and Hyatt. Basically with all the talk about Squirrel and McCoy, it sounds like Keyton has really been putting in the work.
Someone asked Heupel at the PC how he would replace Tillman and Hyatt. His reply was “People asked how are you going to replace Velus…players step up”.

How is Addison Nichols faring ? Is he in line for start this year ? Or needs more time ?
Redshirt freshman Addison Nichols is looking to seize the opportunity this spring as he settles in. Nichols is working exclusively at center for now.

“At the moment it’s all center,” Nichols said. “I’m working there making sure I have it down so that in the season I can play both center and guard well.

“I feel very comfortable (at center). Last year was interesting, but it feels like second nature now. I now can go back from guard to center comfortably.”

He’s a reliable guy and can get you tough yardage. But not much of a threat to take it all the way. Reading the notes on spring practice I saw wright had gotten bigger. I think wright could fill the tough yardage role but still be a bigger threat to gash you. Sampson is quick and shifty and it only makes sense to pair him with a guy who can get the tough yardage

Joe Milton III looked very crisp and polished Tuesday morning. Tennessee started by throwing lots of short, touch routes and Milton looked good there completing all of his passes. The senior kept it up as they moved to longer throws and was mostly passing to Chas Nimrod, Ramel Keyton and Squirrel White.

This just warms my cold, lethal heart. I have a feeling Joe may well exceed even the most optimistic fan expectations.

I know Small is recovering rn.

I think he's done enough to hold his spot down....but.
You may be right.

Sampson has to see the field more.

Wasn't it Small who gave us breathing room to make a deep throw near halftime against FL? The throw that Keyton made a diving catch on?

Vols got the ball inside or around their own 10yrd line.

A play gets stuffed near the line of scrimmage, FL goons push Small(?) back through the endzone after the whistle and it gets really chippy. Like flags almost coming out chippy.

The next play on a hand off, Small breaks a tackle at the line, then refuses to go down when the 2nd man hits him. A bunch of VOL lineman rally and push the FL pile past the 20 for a 1st down. Next play is the Keyton catch.

I agree with you, but I also think he may be right. Small has been our most consistent back, but I can see him steadily getting out talented and losing carries as the year goes on.

Here's to "Nimrod and the Squirrel" becoming the Saturday show the kids have been waiting for. :)

It sounds like Nimrod is looking really good. There is a logjam in front of him with Keyton, Thornton, Bru, and Squirrel, but I think he's gonna be that 5th guy and putting himself in position to start and be very productive in 2024.

I was watching Youtube videos of various games and features of the 2022 Vols. Last night, I paid more attention to the WRs. Those guys were snatching passes that in post (gag) Kiffin era would have hit the ground. They were reaching beyond their torsos to snag balls headed beyond them. Trapping balls threaded between flanking DBs physically assaulting them. And going up with two DBs guarding them and grabbing overhead balls. Many times catching passes in stride and all but vanishing down field afterward. I don't think I had a proper appreciation of our WRs until I paid closer attention last night. If the new corps plays that way, I almost feel pity for our opponents.
