Vols Spring Practice #9

Had it set in my mind that Campbell was the replacement at RT and Mincey/Crawford would continue to man the blind side. Campbell with Umarov backing him up sounds more well thought out and LJIII can learn at his own pace to eventually take over the strong side.

I've always thought Crawford was more of a RT anyway. As for Mincey, going from Left to Right should be easier than going Right to Left.

I kinda thought it would be LT Campbell/Mincey with Crawford/Karic on the right. Hadn't given much thought to Karic playing inside.

I thought Mincey had left tackle locked. Not sure if it's good news or bad news that he's not mentioned

Thanks for the report fingers! Things are looking up. Good to hear we're filling some voids in key positions and players are stepping up. I think Bazooka Joe will be rock solid. Can't wait for season to begin!!! #GBO

McCullough and Walker at safety. Not really suprised. Tank practices well.
Walker has earned his spot after transferring from Ga Tech. He played some good ball last year. I think Charles will be right on McCullough and then overtake him as the season goes along. Jack Slaughter is another dude that will be hard to keep off the field. Thomas might move to Star eventually.

Deniko is a NB/S, but until those young guys emerge he has to play CB. Hadden played good at times, but really needs to mature, and be aware of the moment.

Matthews and Gibson will make it easier for coaches to.put pressure on older guys like Rucker, Turnege, Hadden, and Burrell to put up or shut up. .

These older guys like Burrell and Tank aren't just going to suddenly stop being mistake prone in games.

I think eventually
You'll have .
CB Slaughter 6'0 190 (Sr)
CB Matthews 6'1 185 (Fr)
FS Walker 6'1 200 (Jr)
SS Charles 6'1 190 (Jr)
ST McDonald 6'2 210 (Sr) as the starters

But we play a platoon defense so, there will basically be 2 starting defenses and a 3rd defense for mop up/ depth

Good takes and I agree with all of it. I will say, regarding Slaughter, I think he can be a very good CB with a little more time there. The knock on Kelee Ringo was that his hips were more suited to be a S/NB, but he overcame that with other attributes to be a great CB at UGA. I think Slaughter is similar. He's aggressive, both in terms of attacking the ball and attacking the man with the ball. We need that in our CBs. I think he just needs more time at CB to develop a better feel. Honestly, if that happens, and if Matthews can be the CB we think he can be, by the end of the season, that position will go from a question to a strength.

And I love Charles and Walker at S. Turnage should also get a lot of PT at Star behind McDonald and I think he's better suited there. We finally have the bodies to play guys at their more natural positions and that will make a huge difference.

“He gives us the best chance to win.”

-Pruitt
sadly it looks like that was correct.

Bailey couldn't even full time start at UNLV.
Maurer plays for Stephen F Austin. doesn't start.
Shrout started for Colorado last year, but is transferring out after not doing a great job.

absolutely amazing how fast that changed. shows you the power of good coaching. because both JG and Bailey were highly rated guys.

I really want to see the two Slaughters get some snaps together and make some gang tackles for some cool commentary. Especially if they are elite then we could have some articles/magazine covers with the phrase "Slaughter House"
