Vols That Have Slipped The Mind

Yes . . . That choke job against Auburn is hard to forget.
Failing to get a kick in the air against Alabama, then aiding Jason Julian in knocking the ball far enough backwards to put the Tide in field goal range isn't on my list of Vol Highlights, either.

The offense was putrid in that game, but as muddled as the title picture was that year, if Burke makes those 2 kicks we might not have had to wait 8 more years for a National title.

I think you're absolutely right. The '90 team was easily the best Majors fielded.

Even if we had still lost to Notre Dame, think how screwed up things would have been if we had won the Sugar Bowl to go 11-1-1. Colorado won a share of the National title with an identical record . .. and of course we tied them in the opener.

My gut says we would have finished ahead of Ga Tech. Also, I don't think an undefeated UT team would have lost to Notre Dame. I think a team that talented would have been able to find 6 more points that day if it had been for a National Title.

If Chuck Webb cuts left and runs out of bounds instead of cuts right trying to be the hero, the Vols at least get a field goal try to beat Colorado in that first game. That would be 11-1 and Colorado definately would not have won the NC.

Chuck got to see Burke in practice every day. He didn't want to risk that stiff hitting one of his patented wormburners and have the Buffs block it and run it back. I 'll take Chuck Webb with the ball in his hands over that stooge Burke kicking it every time.

Scott Galyon - went to my highschool before I ever got there

In H.S. football playing Seymour as a freshman, Scott Galyon hit me so damn hard that I was almost knocked into the kicker on an extra point attempt! That goofy looking dude could hit! I made up for it by sacking Chad Pennington the next year against Webb. My two claim to fames against NFL or former NFL players. I know no one gives a $#!t. Just memories.

I agree wtih both of you these points....that team was really good...

i've never forgotten that...i still remember screaming "go out of bounds! go out of bounds!".

that year was a really good year...and the first time i really remember thinking that TN was in fact one of the best teams in the country.

the Auburn and Bama games....what nightmares. could've, whould've, should've...

what exactly did ever contribute? he just took up a scholarship that could have been used by someone that actually could help the team.

1. Pete Panuska - My only memory of him is when he ran a kickoff back 100 yards against Maryland in the sun Bowl (I think).

2. Bill Duff - The man!!! Stuffed Eddie Goeorge on a 4th and goal on the 1 yd. line int eh the Citrus Bowl. Does a great Hulk Hogan, too.

I didn't say he was a world beater, I just mentioned him as someone who probably isn't one of the first players you think of when thinking of former vols. He only had a scholarship because of big bubba.

Most of you are far too young to remember but I remember Dewey Warren "The Swamp Rat" and Bobby Scott as two of the great ones. Those guys elevated Vol football when, frankly, the program had sunk following Gen. Neyland's tenure. I still enjoy listening to Bobby Scott on the radio broadcasts (I haven't heard him this year but I'm assuming that he still does that work) because he absolutely can't stand Vanderbilt and I feel the same way......

Pete Panuska also had the "run of the year" against Rutgers in '85.

Another one I remembered...the punter before britton colquitt, I believe his name was Leverton.

We've been spoiled by good punting for quite some time now.

Dave(id) Leaverton. I think he played with the Jaguars there for a time. Not sure where he is now.
