All I can say about Addison Nichols leaving and going to Arkansas is wishing him luck. I talked to him a few times and he’s just a super nice guy like genuinely one of the nicest people you’d ever meet. All the players I’ve met around campus have either been nice or funny and I think it speaks to the culture Huepel has built and the guys he recruits. Definitely rooting for Addison Nichols unless he plays the vols though. I wanted to speak to how nice he was when people where bashing him for entering the portal but I didn’t have posting privileges on here yet.

Thanks for the reply. I didn’t know him personally, but the mods on VQ said he didn’t jive with Ellarbee. Its such a weird move imo because he was in line for significant PT/ possibly start this year at LG and had put in 2 years. I dont see anyone on the current roster that is clearly better than him, so I can’t help but think he and Ellarbee butted heads more than once.

I didn’t know him well enough to ask him personal questions about his relationships with coaches nor have I seen him since he entered the portal but that’s certainly possible. I just know he is a super nice dude. most of our convos were not about football but our common teacher was fond of him and he was just overall a great guy. I always thought it might have been because we where bringing the starters back and because he didn’t grade out very highly when he played so may have got passed up by guys. but I’m not qualified to speculate on that I was definitely sad and somewhat surprised when I saw him hit the portal though.

This just triggered a question; Is Martinez going to be brought back, is he leaving, retiring? Is the mass exodus of secondary guys a result of, (A) Martinez is being retained, (B) he's leaving, retiring?

We will be going to the bowl game with what amounts to a completely different secondary. Is this a good thing, does it matter? A look at the future of the secondary is obviously going to be on display in the bowl game. Given Iowa's ineptitude on offense, if we can pressure the quarterback for the whole game, I don't see it hurting our chance to go out with a win.

Thoughts, opinions?

Fans were screaming for all the freshmen to play. All the starters hit the portal, fans are worried about what's going on.

Wonder if this guy is balancing opportunity and NIL offers. We must be in it, but don't believe we will overpay to get him or anyone here. Spend the big bucks, could make a lot of our depth mad after they calculate their relative value and go through spring and if not satisfied hit the May portal. Guessing we are not the biggest offer, but he may believe he can make that up with NFL money if showcased correctly. Also SPECULATING if we are the lead dog, we may be having him to defer his announcement till Wed when this early portal window closes. Of course he may be wanting to see our game and make his own decisions about our passing future with Nico.

Like always I will go with the staff and their decision processes, and this one will stay in the I will believe it when I see it category until he is enrolled somewhere. I personally think we have other areas that could use the boost through the portal (and one HS guy) more, but have no idea how many more guys are projected to leave and make room under our 83 limit.

Bottom line I am clueless on this one, and that is before I throw the Bru and Thornton decisions into whether to spend the money on this guy who is generally predicted to be a one year wonder. Are they or the staff slow playing their announcements? UGH.

I think I read that a few have to go in order to get under 85. Not sure how many though. @LWSVOL , you're good at this. Where are we on roster spots and scholarship reductions and all of that.

always possible but at this point not any rumblings on anyone.

I fully expect in the next year or two we will see 25-35 portal players for most schools each year. Too many kids want more money and that is the avenue to get it. Its going to be constant. Portal just opened today but there has been multiple players going into portal most days for weeks.
