Georgia had scored 21 early in the second quarter and only managed a field goal for nearly three whole quarters.
Which is the point. They won that game on defense. Period. Our offense will have to be bigger and tougher or we won't ever score enough to win a game against Georgia.
Our defense gave up a few plays but we did not get torched. We stopped their running game well enough to not give up any second half rushing touchdownz. 195 yards and zero TD's for Hooker. By far the worst performance by a UT qb this year. Missed Hyatt, Fant & McCoy for long touchdowns, among other miscues. We lost because of our offensive performance.
Here are UGA's offensive possessions in our game against them:
6 plays, 24 yards, 2:05, FUMBLE, 0-0 (possession ended at 12:55 1st)
5 plays, 80 yards, 1:33, TD, 7-3 UGA (possession ended at 10:34 1st)
3 plays, 6 yards, 1:36, PUNT, 7-3 UGA (possession ended at 6:58 1st)
1 play, 37 yards, 0:07, TD, 14-3 UGA (possession ended at 3:28 1st)
6 plays, 64 yards, 2:57, TD, 21-3 UGA (possession ended at 14:13 2nd)
5 plays, 12 yards, 2:55 PUNT, 21-6 UGA (possession ended at 6:33 2nd)
12 plays, 78 yards, 4:52, FG, 24-6 UGA (possession ended at half)
HALFTIME
15 plays, 67 yards, 8:44, FG, 27-6 UGA (possession ended at 1:09 3rd)
IT STARTED RAINING DURING THE ABOVE DRIVE, AFTER THAT UGA THREW 1 PASS THE REST OF THE GAME, then went:
1 play, 3 yards, FUMBLE, 0:10 (following our fumble on the previous possession)
3 PLAYS, -8 yards, PUNT, 2:51
3 plays, -2 yards, PUNT, 0:28 (we took 2 of our 3 timeouts)
4 plays, 12 yards, END OF GAME, 2:42
The fact is that they went super conservative after it got messy and we fumbled it back and forth at the end of the 3rd quarter, it's not like we figured anything out about how to stop their offense. Credit for stopping the straight ahead run where credit is due but they aren't going to be one dimensional like that in a different situation, and we aren't going to know what they are going to do in a different situation. At that point, Smart figured we couldn't score 21 points in the time left at that point (basically 1 quarter left to go) unless he gave us something cheap and so they didn't, they just ran it into the line to burn clock and make us burn timeouts except for one play where they tried to pick up a third down and the ball went right through the receivers hands. I have little faith we could stop them in a situation where they are leaving their playbook open, as they likely would have had it not started monsooning.
