A few comments.
Buzz did a great coaching job in the first half and the players added to it with great intensity.
The players lapsed back into a 'lazier' offense down the stretch, settling for outside shots instead of getting the ball into the paint. This is where I think Buzz should have stepped up and made sure the ball was going inside. However, if during the dry stretch in the 2nd half, if the Vols just hit 20% of the outside shots, the game is not even close.
A win over the #11 team in the nation, no matter how close, is big. And yes, this win helps when it comes tournament selection time. A few seasons ago, the Vols had a 17-11 record (9-7 SEC) but were out of the NCAA because the selection committee thought the Vols had a weak non-conference schedule. Buzz has beefed up the non-conf schedule, so if the Vols finish with 17 wins this season, they'll be in the NCAA tournament.
Currently at 9-6 overall, 2-1 in the SEC, the schedule shapes up like this...
The win last night was big because 5 of the next 6 are on the road, and the 1 home game is Kentucky ...
Jan 15 @ South Carolina
Jan 19 @ Florida
Jan 22 @ Louisville
Jan 25 Kentucky
Jan 29 @ Auburn
Feb 2 @ Vanderbilt
Feb 5 LSU
Feb 9 Alabama
Feb 12 Florida
Feb 19 @ Mississippi
Feb 23 South Carolina
Feb 26 @ Arkansas
Mar 2 @ Kentucky
Mar 5 Georgia
If the Vols just win their home games, they would have 15 wins. (They were 7-1 in SEC home games last season) 6 of their road games are winnable (South Carolina, Florida, Auburn, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss, and Arkansas). If they are able to win just 2 of those, they'll have the 17 wins needed. A first round win in the SEC tournament only enhances their chances of making it to the NCAA tournament.
