My wife and I were standing in line to get in the Superdome and a Miami couple decked out in all their finest Miami gear were in line behind us. I overheard the female say “there sure are a lot of Tennessee fans here” to her companion after which he rather loudly replied “don’t worry they will all be gone by halftime”. As we all know now, 99% of the Miami fans had deserted the dome by halftime and there was absolutely no “green or U” anything on Bourbon Street after the game. It was great to be a Tennessee Vol !!!

I was there, the only bowl I ever attended.
We peed in the hand-washing station -- I mean, it looked like a big urinal to this country boy. I was wearing thermal u.w. under my UT shirt, and had to take it off at half-time. Folks saw me putting the Vols shirt back on, and accused me of changing teams at half-time. 😆

Coach Donahue designed a special defense for that game. I ask him one time did he have second thoughts after that TD over the top (I’m thinking it was Andre Kramer who was defending and got confused) seemed to easy. He said he did for a moment but soon realized they had worked too hard to abandon it right away. Of course…the blitz package began to totally disrupt Miami and the Vols completely dominated the rest of the game. A great season with many unlikely hero’s!! Thanks for the memory!
That roster was made up of workman like attitudes all season on the defensive side of the ball, with some of my memorable position players being; Kelly Ziegler (LB), Charles Davis (S), Hovanic (DT), Darin Miller (NT). Ziegler hailed from Miami as I recall.
On the offensive side of the ball, some names remain familiar, however my favs were smaller receivers we had that year in ; Eric Swanson, Terence Cleveland, and Thomas “TD” Woods. And yes, Joey Clinkscales along with the first team AA Tim McGhee.
As everyone has mentioned, just a very special happening down in NOLA following a very difficult/challenging season whereby we lost one, tied two, and won the rest!
The loss in Gainesville, along with the win @ Legion Field will always be remembered as two of the hardest fought football games of the decade. We had a very special season in ‘85!

YouTube has blocked Miami game... so, have to settle for Auburn

I remember that Saturday very well. My GF’s dad was a red neck Vandy fan and was giving me 💩about the game. He knew I was a broke college freshman but wanted to bet on TN’s game and Vandy’s vs Bama. I had the Vols and the points and Bama minus the points.
It appeared Vandy was going to cover, but instead of taking a knee, Bama kept handing the ball off. They scored a TD with less than a minute to cover and then the Vols whipped that ass. I won $50 off of him.
He pulled that crap on me again for the Sugar Bowl. We were at his brother’s house to watch the game and I told him I was broke. After calling me a poon and what not he said “bet your pants for the ride home then”…. I took the Vols - 8 1/2…. 😁.
When the game was over I told him to shuck’em off. He tried to weasel out by saying “you come take them off”…. Thinking I wouldn’t …. I told him to lay his ass on the floor and I pulled them off by the legs. He drove home in his Fruit of the Looms on 1/1 freezing that ass off
