Sav’ell Smalls released a top six on Sunday with some major changes to his list of favorites as Oregon, Florida State, Tennessee, Alabama, Washington and Washington State made the cut. After talking to numerous people, here are some thoughts as the five-star defensive end from Burien (Wash.) Kennedy Catholic works toward a decision:
Oregon: Smalls has been a fan of the Oregon program for many years and even talked about having interest in the Ducks when coach Willie Taggart (now at Florida State) was in Eugene. Oregon’s staff under coach Mario Cristobal is aggressive and relentless on the recruiting trail and Smalls has taken multiple trips to campus. He also likes that Cristobal has experience in the SEC that he’s brought to the Pac-12 so that could be a huge bonus. Playing opposite Kayvon Thibodeaux, a five-star in the 2019 class, might be a major selling point as well.
Florida State: Over the summer, Smalls spent four days in Tallahassee getting acclimated to the program, the school and the overall feel of the town. By all accounts, it went really well and the Seminoles have to be considered one of the frontrunners for him even as he cuts his list down further. The five-star has good chemistry with the Florida State coaching staff and he has close friend and former teammate Tre’Shaun Harrison already on the team. During his trip this summer, the two talked about how it could help convince Smalls that Florida State is the right place. As the fall approaches, Florida State is in a strong spot.
Tennessee: When Smalls released his top 12 list in February, Tennessee did not make the cut but the Volunteers have not given up recruiting him and after a two-day visit this summer the SEC program has emerged in his top six. The five-star has developed a strong relationship with coach Jeremy Pruitt, coach Brian Niedermeyer and others on the staff. This season could be huge especially if the Vols get off to a hot start and then impress Smalls on his official visit. At this point, Tennessee could be a long shot to land his commitment.
-RivalsAlabama: During an interview in February, Smalls called Alabama a “football factory” but it was definitely a positive comment because he saw it as a place that produces NFL-worthy players every year. That could be huge in Smalls’ considerations moving forward. The five-star also talked highly about Alabama’s ability to win championships and he seemed to be impressed by the off-field offerings in Tuscaloosa that don’t get noticed as much. There seems to be some uncertainty exactly where Alabama stands in Smalls’ recruitment but the Crimson Tide can never be counted out.
Washington: In February, Smalls had Washington in his top 12 and said it was “self-explanatory” and that the Huskies’ coaching staff does a terrific job of developing talent for the NFL. But only months later (and after some highly-publicized trips to Washington) Smalls said he was eliminating the Huskies and thought his future would be better served away from home. Now, UDub is back among his favorites. It’s a winning program, a great coaching staff and the Huskies do develop players every season to play in the pros. All of those things - plus he can stay close to home - could be compelling reasons why Smalls is rethinking his interest in Washington.
Washington State: There are some who are already dismissing Washington State in Smalls’ recruitment but he had an excellent visit to Pullman this offseason and the Cougars’ coaching staff continues to put in the work to impress him. The real question when it comes to Smalls and Washington State is not whether he likes the program and where it’s headed but whether the five-star will pull the trigger and commit to the Cougars. He would be the highest-rated pledge in program history during the Rivals era and would have the ability to step on the field from Day 1 and be a superstar.
