How long is the Vol Nation going to take to realize Fulmer and Sanders cannot match wits with the top minds in our conference or the nation. Remember Spurriers Gators, Nebraska, LSU, Kansas State, Maryland, Georgia in our house, Clemson, Auburn two straight years, and on and on and on. C'mon people, does it take a genius to see if we fail to have better talent we have no chance. Having not missed a game since 1973 I could go on, but will not. There must be a change or it will just get worse. The Head Coach feels he is above reproach and our program is heading south, and that is not the Orange Bowl.

My former long-term complaint with Fulmer was that he hadn't put together a coaching team with the Psych component to win big games- I used to half-jokingly say he ought to hire Pat Summitt as a consultant (Win or You Die), then they'd be perfect.

Then he hired Trooper and I thought, "Damn, I'm smart, and now he is too."

The Auburn game, though, made me wonder if I'd stupidly underestimated Fulmer's ability to do 99% of the job better than anyone- then toss in a last 1% so screwed-up that it poisoned the well.

Only 2 on TN's 6 turnovers in the Auburn game weren't directly due to coaching failures, and the 2 that weren't wouldn't have happened to properly prepared kids. Auburn only got 1 "honest" interception. The others were the result of the quarterback and reciever being on entirely different pages. That was the result of our "signal in" system, a system the coaches refused to stop using even after it was clear it wasn't working.

Fulmer "admitted" that he didn't properly prepare the kids for Auburn. But I've yet to hear him take responsibility for not only completely changing our offensive game-plan, but for failing to adapt and change the strategy once it became painfully clear that it wasn't working.

Having been to the games since 1973, you should have some painful memories from the Bill Battle and Johnny Majors years. Is that what you want to return to??

:dunno:

What exactly do you mean by "honest" interception? They all looked like bad throws and/or crappy reads to me. Coaching plays some role, but you can't attribute every mistake to poor coaching. Unfortunately, mistakes are just part of the territory especially when you play young QBs. Realistically, you had to expect them to wet the bed somewhere . . . and that's probably not the last time it will happen.

TO donsargegolf:

:bad: :bad: :bad: I do not really appreciate the personal insults you sent via email. I have not insulted you nor your intelligence in any way on this board. All I have tried to do is present facts. As hard as that seems to some people, facts do count for something.

The reason I'll stick with Fulmer is that, at least in my lifetime, he's the only UT coach to ever go 13-0 and win a national championship. He has elevated the program to a point for the last decade that it has not been since General Neyland. Sure there have been some winning seasons since Neyland, but not at an 80% rate over a whole decade.

I remember too well the games while Majors was coach.... close games with the likes of Wake Forest, losses to Army, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Miss State, etc. The 7-5 season of 1986, the 5-6 season of 1988, the late '70s. The bowl losses to Iowa in the Peach Bowl, Maryland in the Sun Bowl, Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl, etc. Don't get me wrong, I like Majors... he just did not elevate this program to the point where fans EXPECT to win 10 games EVERY season. Used to be the even-odd theory. Majors had great teams during the odd years, but not-so-great teams during even years. I remember all that. I remember how happy and proud Vol fans were in 1985 with a 9-1-2 record.

How about Bill Battle never beating Alabama. Battle losing to North Texas State. Once Dickey's recruits were gone, he had nothing.

Doug Dickey.... well ... he left for Florida.

I could go on, but I figure that most people get my point. And those that don't, I consider a difference of opinion. Nothing to name-call and get personal about.

Funny comment. A week ago, Sanders and Fulmer were heros. I'd rather trade some fair weather fans than these coaches.

What did I miss in here?Is someone sending fowl e-mails?

Not too bad. He wrote me 3 emails in all. He started out by calling me a "no brain". He also said he could teach me about football?

He did email me back and say that he did not think that he had insulted me, just presented the facts. Although my wife would probably agree with him, I don't really think that me having "no brain" is factual.

The rest of his responses were actually quite thought provoking. I don't know what the rule on posting emails is, but he does make some interesting points regarding Fulmer's coaching ability. I don't agree with the angle he's taking, but it is interesting. I was not offended by his football comments.

I'm not sure what the etiquette on posting emails is, but I will post some of what he wrote if someone tells me its okay?

Allvol, did Sarge send you any e-mails after the game tonight? :dlol:

Two wins over top 10 teams in 3 weeks . . . too bad our program is declining and the coaches are all stupid.

Here are excerpts stating his case. I've tried to remove any direct references to me and just posted his points of discussion. Hopefully, he won't be offended by my posting this? I think it is good reading. Some may agree with him. However, as I've stated before, I can respect his opinion, I just don't have to share it.......

... The only reason Fulmer can be kept is because of the talent that keeps his job.... he is outcoached fundamentally by Spurrier, Osborne, Snyder(k-state), Friedgen(maryland), Bowden(clemson),Richt 3 times(georgia),Tubberville twice(auburn), and that is just a start. Even the games we win we are out coached.

I play golf with the O-coordinator for the Tn Titans and he says "of all the athletes they have drafted the kids from UT are the worst fundamentally coached player in the league."

Do you know why teams can bunch up 8 in the box as we see every game? Because Sanders does not know how to move the defense out of their desired sets and either match up the blocking numbers or spread the field with more recievers...

... the talent level is not 31-10 difference as in the Auburn game... when we play eight games against top 10 foes and come up 269-96 defecit the coaching is the fault. Fulmer's winning record is built up mainly on lesser talented programs with substantially lesser support. We can have great support and great coaching...

... I explained to you factually why we fail, and will fail saturday miserably... Tennessee does so many things fundamentally unsound the players, as good as they are, have no chance to succeed...I've been in or around football for 37 years and some things are not acceptable.

Like you say - he's entitled to his opinion, but it's laughable that people have to always assign blame for a loss and cannot accept the fact that sometimes your team loses simply because the other team was better that day.

I've never seen a coach get less credit for winning than Fulmer. When we win, it's because we were supposed to win with our superior talent. If we lose, it's because we got outcoached. At some point you've got to take a step back and say "Hmmm, we average 10 wins a year. Our coach must be pretty good." The sad thing is that we've just gotten done beating 2 out of the 3 top 10 opponents that we've faced and I know without a shadow of a doubt that the next time we lose, we'll get a carbon copy of this post somewhere on this site calling Fulmer an idiot. :shakehead:

My personal favorite portion of the argument was the Tennessee Titans comment. If our guys are so fundamentally unsound, why are there so many of them in the NFL? :dunno:

Hey GaVol, the reason for the # of Vols in the league is the talent , not the coaching. I eat my words this week BUT, if we don't kick THREE field goals of 49 yds or longer the Ga. game would have been over much sooner. Especially the last one because of the 25 plus extra yards we gave Ga., and 2:00 more minuates off the clock it would have run off Ga. wouldn't of had time for the last drive to take place. Neyland, Wyatt, Dickey and Majors wouldn't have made that mistake in judgement. Anyone read the Game Maxims lately ?

Hey GaVol, the reason for the # of Vols in the league is the talent , not the coaching.

That's exactly the type of unfair statement I'm talking about. Never giving coaches credit for good play, but ripping them when things go bad.

By that logic, if I see one of your golf students make the PGA tour, I should chalk it up to talent, but if I happen to see one mishit a shot a little thin I should race to the internet to tell everyone how much you suck and that Butch Harmon would never have a student hit one like that.

(No offense intended, just an example.) ;)

Because the in-state talent is thin in Tennessee, Fulmer has to recruit nationwide. He's one of the best in the country. If you replace Fulmer with one of the best x's and o's coach in the game, how will that coach get the talent to come to Tennessee? What coaches out there would come to Tennessee right after they fired Fulmer with a 0.800 record?? Ron Zook might be the only coach willing to come to Tennessee

I agree completely. What Fulmer may lack in X's and O's he more thatn makes up for it in recruiting.....and he is a Tennessee boy who bleeds orange. Believe it or not he loves the program as much as we do.

My argument for people who don't think Fulmer is doing a good job is to ask who they would replace him with....that would come here. I can't think of anyone...but then again I like Fulmer. B)
