Wanna know why CCM preaches defense?

I'm sorry if that came across as pearl vs Martin....it was more of an offensive coach who gives up 90 a game verse defensive coach like Martin, that was all.

You got so worked up in defending pearl you missed my last sentence....all I'm saying is its just as exciting to me for it to be a defensive battle as offensive shoot out as long as we're in it for the W...I don't care if it's an offensive or defensive game, if we're competing it's exciting.

Pearl doesnt need defending, his record speaks for itself. I think you got confused using his teams as an example and meant oliver purnell's Depaul team who scores alot but usually gives up more.

I dont agree that defense wins championships in basketball....good teams win championships. They have to be good at offense and defense....name the elite defensive teams that have won championships....The only one that i can think of that is even close is Michigan State in several yrs.

Defense is fine it seems.. But the offense is a wtf is going on at practice kinda deal. You must know every team will run a zone against us. Even if they don't it would be nice to see any adjustments made from one game to another when teams run a zone. This teams offense is g.od dam.n eye sore when we're against a zone.

Know what's good about great defense?
The MOs don't show up after a win

Has Martin been beaten by 29+ yet in an SEC tournament game? Has he lost to completely inferior SEC teams with "high profile" offensive players, ie UGA in 2010-11? No? Huh. Interesting.

Talk all you want about the offense, and yes it's bad against a zone...but with a defense you can be in any game.

Perfect example...18-16 VOLS lead at half after shooting 25% for the half.

The only problem with that:

Its like having a QB that throws for 350 yrs in a game, but can't put together a 30 yrd drive at the end to put your team in FG range, or run out the clock to win a game.

*Being in a game doesn't matter if you can't FINISH.

I hate to take this here and likely will regret it, but....

Defense wins championships, it's not just some cliche.

We could have a Pearl team sure and have scored 40 in the half and maybe it'd excite you guys, but we'd have given up 50.

I rather take a W, I don't give a $hit if it's 1-0....you do what it takes to win and right now we are beating a ranked team at their place.

70% of the time Pearl's teams scored more than the opponents.

That was by far not an exciting game. It was excruciating to watch. To watch a team that bad offensively was not "exciting" in the least. Spacing was bad. Everyone standing around on offense. No movement. Gave up on trying to feed the post. No passing to the high post at all. Walk the ball up to run the clock and shoot a desperation 3 or try to make a one on one move is not good offense what so ever. CCM can be a "defensive" team. But at some point he needs to be able to coach some offensive. I'm not convinced that CCM is very good at game adjustments. Definitely not sold on his play calling for a shot after time outs. This is just one game, and CCM should win a lot of games here, but he needs to concentrate just a little on the offense. I've watched a LOT of basketball in my time and the offensive performance Friday was the worst I have ever seen.

Seriously,Pearl's teams were 2 points from being a final four team.....2 points from a second elite eight.

He beat several really good teams in their building....Martin's elite defense has yet to make a NCAA tournament yet......How many championships has Purdue won and that is the team that we most closely resemble.

Agreed. At our absolute best under Cuonzo (and this year won't be our absolute best), we'll look like Purdue; which is ugly, and has historically translated to a big win season and a tourney crash. To have a chance for the Purdue uglified offense to work you usually have to have a go to guy (the epitome being Glenn Robinson). Unfortunately, he has to stay hot for the whole tourney or he'll, as I like to say, shoot us out of it. Assuming we improve on our post depth, Hubbs sophomore year will most likely be when we really settle into the Purdue mold.

Side note: There was nothing unusual about the Georgetown game; Cuonzo has yet to show he has any clue how to attack a zone.

His offensive strategy is, and I quote, "Players need to make plays."

And you would prefer he threw them under bus???? He is saying what they need to do and that's make plays. They didn't, pretty simple!!

I'd prefer he had a system that helped them to make plays. It's fairly ugly against man defenses, but it's nonexistent vs the zone. The point wasn't about him criticizing players, anyway; it was that he's using the "roll the ball out there" offensive approach, which isn't much different from what Pearl did in the halfcourt.

What is the point of this thread? Great job Martin, you held the worst shooting offense in the Big East to 37 points and lost, great moral victory. When all is said and done Georgetown will not even be in the top 5 of their conference, this was not a good loss.

Just curious. Who are the 5 teams in the Big East that are better than Georgetown?
