Lot of that **** going on up there. When my grandfather was alive, he always said he would never vote for a politician or contribute to their campaign unless term limits was on the top of their issue list. I don't know if it is a 100% fix but it is needed desperately. Career politicians is not what our founders intended or envisioned. True Civil servants. Unpaid. Sacrificing their own to serve the best interests of their neighbors.
Trump had the same issue tbh. The last two president's saying they truly undertsand the plight of the common man is laughable.Current WH occupant is a prime example. Never had a real job outside of government but pretends to be a man of the people. Calling him out because he is the highest profile example. There are plenty on both sides of the aisle.
I think it has more to do with a detachment from reality than age. I think the average senior citizen can empathize with what our youth might be going through. Most have children/grandchildren that they witness their struggles. Now mega wealthy politicians' kids/grandchildren don't typically have those same struggles. There's a huge disconnect between Washington politicians and the average American. I don’t think age is a huge contributor.Of course, but there are way more of one than the other.
If Spain is gonna apologize for something they did five h u n d r e d years ago then I demand Dooley apologize for not recruiting a single offensive lineman a decade ago
Elizabeth Willing Powell: "Well, Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?"
Benjamin Franklin: "We have a republic, if we can keep it."
The fact that every politician spouts on and on about our democracy tells me, if we haven't officially lost our republic we a danger danger close.
I dont totally disagree with you, although I do think being able to empathize with struggle is different than understanding tbh. Imo, it's absolutely related to them having had such a fundamentally different experience in their 20s as opposed to people in their 20s now. Its not their "fault", nor is it malicious in most cases but I've had **** said to me by older people years ago about buying houses or the cost of college that you wouldn't believe lol. Definitely detachment from current reality.I think it has more to do with a detachment from reality than age. A true democracy is a form of government where everyone has a equal voice/vote on everything. It is basically mob rule. We have a Representative Republic. We have never been anything close to a democracy until recently. We more closely resemble the mov rule mentality of a democracy thanks to technology and SM today. That is not a good thing. Our politicians are swayed by the vocal minorities with the loud megaphones of the internet instead of the best interest of the people that sent them to DC (or Nashville/or other state capital) in the first place.A republic is a form of government in which the people elect their representatives through the democratic process aka democracy.
Ergo a republic does not exist without democracy.
Otherwise you have a monarchy or a dictatorship.
Note: we even use Direct Democracy at the state level for things such as ballot initiatives and referendums.
Well I'm 61. I have a 29 y/o daughter. Her and her husband are both professionals with well paying jobs without children. They've saved well into the 6 figures for a down payment on a house. They want to duplicate what my wife and I have which is acreage to build a house on (large barndo). They can't find anything that they feel like they can afford. Land around Knox county is going for $20-$30K/acre. Some of it is so rough you can barely find a spot to build on. I at 61 definitely understand the plight that kids are going through. This example of a couple that have it 1000X better than most. Home ownership is becoming just a far fetched dream for many of our youth.I think being able to empathize with struggle is different than understanding tbh. I feel their pain, unfortunately.Well I'm 61. I have a 29 y/o daughter. Her and her husband are both professionals with well paying jobs without children. You can't discount wisdom. Wisdom comes with age. You know what the old saying is... the older I get, the smarter my parents get.I feel their pain, unfortunately.
Obviously it's not monolithic. You always have good posts in the other thread so I know you know what's up. This was more just in general from my perspective, being almost 35.
I totally agree with you on this, it shouldn't matter if the candidate has a R or a D beside his/ her name. The best person should win. I was raised as a Republican and I voted Republican because I was told to by my father. As I got older I changed my mindset and said maybe the other individual is the better candidate. I've voted for Democrat before because I agreed more with that individual. That what makes it so frustrating is that of all the people in this country that would make great caring thoughtful tough leaders, we send the stupidest laziest excuse filled bags of crap to DC over and over and over again and think that this time around they will truly do what is right and best for their constituents. We have to stop voting for letters and start voting for people. Our people have to stop identifying themselves as letters. The letters need us divided. They want us divided. And here we are on a Saturday morning sniping at one another on a sports discussion forum doing their bidding.

The government rarely does anything to help. In a country our size, it is virtually impossible to not impact one group of people negatively when you try to do something positive for another group. That is why a small well regulated federal government that has limited power and responsibility was the intention of our founders. It allowed the states to govern smaller more particular populations where like minded people could gather in different states with the understanding that we would band together to defend one another against foreign adversaries and speak with one voice on the international stage. We have gone faaaar afield from that original intent.Inflation was *worldwide* and caused by several factors, like the ridiculous amount of money spent *worldwide* to prevent economies from melting down, and the subsequent chip shortage and supply chain meltdown. In the US, it was further exacerbated by tariffs on goods from China. So while there are plenty of good reasons for criticizing the current WH occupant, not sure the post COVID economy and inflation is his fault.
Also turns out that my own business lost 6 figures due to a "tax cut" passed by a Republican senate and house, and signed by a Republican president. They "paid" for that "tax cut" by changing tax rules on companies that do R&D, forcing us to capitalize employee salaries, rather than expense them like nearly every other employee. That one kicked in last year, but was cooked in years ago.
Ok. Thanks for the civics lessons. I don't need to you to splain it to me. I know how it works. I also know it is broken and in desperate need of an enema. You are referring to a Direct Democracy and no the US is not that on the federal level (but as I stated, states do employ it for certain things)
We use democracy to elect our representatives. The two things are intertwined.
Without democracy there is no republic. It’s been that way since the Romans invented it.
I completely agree. I do not agree that describes one (current) party over another. Not any more. It's all uniparty theater. The government rarely does anything to help.
