We all hated Dooley, he couldn't get the job done, etc etc we've all heard it before.

Just a simple discussion question, do you think Derek Dooley is/was a good wide receivers coach? He did put Zach Rogers, Justin Hunter, CP and Darick Rogers in the league (natural talent and athleticism also helped haha).

Just curious to hear some (slightly) reasonable thoughts.

Pretty good receiver himself. Bit of a problem getting YAC, though. Prone to spiking the ball.

Guys don't make it to the highest level of their profession for nothing. Yes I would have him as a WR coach (only) for any team

It does seem like he can spot good receiver talent, so sure, him at WR would be pretty good it would seem.

Would not let that goofball touch any administrative decision about the program, or recruiting with a 10 foot pole.

not sure if it was him as a coach or talent at WR... as far as dooley regardless I wouldn't let this guy coach a pee wee team let alone a ncaa/nfl team

he seemed like a great guy, but i think if it wasn't for his daddy he wouldn't get a second look

I think the talent has more to do with these players getting to the NFL. Darick Rodgers was at a smaller school his last year in school and he is in the NFL.

I never hated him,he seems to be a good offensive coach and there is no denying that he liked to pass the ball, the receivers where what lead the Vols while he was here and they did well,so i would say yes

I would be apprehensive with him at any coaching position after his run at Tennessee.

He might make a pretty good commentator though.

I was listening to TN Sports Radio last week and Daniel Hood was on there talking about all the coaches they had been with over his years there. He said something interesting. He said he learned more X and O stuff from Dooley that his problem was he had a hard time keeping guys motivated. But said he was smart when it came to X's and O's

Not sure we can make a judgment based on Patterson (not here long enough to be coached), Hunter, and Rogers. Hunter was a great player the first game of his freshman season. Now, if he had taken a two-star like Jordan Matthews and made him the all-time SEC receiver, we would have some evidence. Hire me as receiver coach, and I guarantee you I'll make a player out of North.

Respectfully its difficult to get beyond your first statement ' we all hated Dooley'....on the contrary the vast majority of fans loved the man, especially those on this board and would ridicule, insult and attack any poster who would even objectively question him in any manner up until near his tenure....

For the record I didn't think he should be hired as our coach but I never hated him...

Get in line behind the hundreds of other internet coaches. It's a thankless job and the pay is absolutely zero, and the other internet coaches are all better than you or anyone else. :loco:

I think there's something positive to be said about coaches that are much better at position coaching than at managing (i.e. coordinators or HC jobs). If you look at Dooley, he was at LSU with Saban as TE coach (and recruiting coordinator, I believe  ) and then Saban took him to Miami to coach the Dolphins with a handful of his other assistants. However, Dooley sucked as a head coach. Willie Martinez was a good position coach at UGA, but the moment he took control of their defense (with Jancek, I guess), the fans near revolted. And, dare I say it, the ol' Pastrami himself, Sal Sunseri, had a phenomenal LB corps at Bama, but then when we hired him as DC, he was in charge of (statistically) the worst defense in UT history. And now, Sal is coaching in the NC game.

My point is not to argue the ifs and buts here, but to point out that simply, some coaches are much better at position coaching than scheming at any level. JMO.

First statement is false. Assuming someone is competent just because they made it up the ladder is unwise.

The Cowboys have a lot of passing yardage. i don't know if it is because of Dooley or something else. I realize he is/has been good friends with their head coach, but I doubt he would be coaching in the NFL if he didn't know the position.

I didn't hate him, and still don't. He didn't work out. He had a difficult job. Period.
