I wouldn't remember, but was Kevin Nash any good when he played bball at UT? How was his career before he took off to be a huge wrestling star?

I know he played for DeVoe, and from what I remember from stories he told, he almost got into a fight with him.

Pretty good defender and rebounder. Offense was terrible, EXCEPT when he played Kentucky. Always had good games against the Cats. Shooting form was terrible. Instead of flipping the ball with his wrist, looked like he was squeezing it between two hands until it popped out and went toward the basket.

Yes, off the top of my head, Kevin Nash played a couple of years for Devoe. He then transferred to Tennessee Tech and spent one winter living in the basement of Evans dorm. I lived in Browning which attached to Evans. One cold winter night, returning home from the library, I had just hit the steps of Evans and Kevin emerged from the basement. He was in the shadows and huge. Bout scared the **** out of me.

The plan was for him to sit out one year and then play for Tech. But it didn't work out and he never played there.

I think that was January of 1982...might be off by a year.

To answer your question, I think he always came off the bench for UT. He was the big thug on the bench. Limited skills.

He sure was a big dude.

Yes, back then, most of the basketball players coming out of high school were tall and skinny. Kevin was tall and thick. He was different.

Basketball has really changed a ton. It has became much more physical than in the 70s. All skinny guys playing back then

Played a little in Europe, but ended up in the WWE.
Wrestled as Chet Lemon or Diesel.

Kevin Nash was alright. He won the WCW title a couple of times when I was a kid, so I guess that means he was good.

Oh we're talking about basketball.

I know he joked with Rodman a lot about being the same 'style' of player when he was in college...minus the drag and hair coloring.

Big guy from Detroit. Saw him play alot in the 79-80 season. He was not that good of a skill player, but he was a bruiser inside. He did play pretty well against Kentucky that season, IIRC. Also had a good game in Knoxville that year against St. Johns in a non-conference matchup in Stokely in December that season.

The part about the fight with DeVoe is true. It got him kicked off the team, eventually.

I was there and remember him having great games against KY, played in Stokley with the Dancing Bear, Howard Wood, Chuck Threets, Dan Federman, lot of meat in that line-up....Dale Ellis was pure majic, it seemed his shot never caused the net to move....Kevin was dating Denise Conrad.....wow she was smokin hot, I think she later married Bill Bates and moved to Dallas

Nash was the #2 player in the state of Michigan coming out of high school #1 that year was Magic Johnson. The only reason he had a lengthy wrestling career was because he was big not to be confused with good .

Kevin Nash actually taught me how to shoot a basketball...He and some of the other guys would go down to the varsity courts and play pickup games now and then and my brother would go down there to play...I was too little but would go over on a goal by myself and just shoot sometimes, Well Kevin was in between games and walked over and showed me how to shoot...He was a super nice guy to me...I think I was around 13-15 years old when he played there...I remember thinking he was the biggest person I had ever seen up to that point...As far as a player goes he wasn't all that good...Good defensive player I remember but not much on the offensive end....He was like a hero to me...He got into a fight with one of the assistant coaches and threw him over a table if I remember correctly...Been a long time so it might have been a different story but I seem to remember it that way so if anyone has a actual recall of the event then I stand corrected.

Well, I only know him through the old WWF. He wrestled under the name Diesel. He came to the ring & stepped up on the apron & then stepped over the top rope to enter the ring. When I found out that he had played bball at UT I was like "for real dude". I could not recall him playing there. I would watch the games on TV back in those days but don't recall ever seeing him on the court. Well, he's made his millions in the WWE & has become famous for playing the "bad" guy part in the soap opera of wrestling. He's also been in a couple of movie roles playing bad guy parts like in the Punisher where he played the Russian (blonde) bruiser part. Just for those that didn't know.

Steve was never very good. His claim to fame was getting caught bonking and cheerleader @ Neyland one night. Probably highlight of career!!!
