How in the hell did we have such a poor ending to the 2020-2021 season.... I totally forgot how bad our loss in the first round to Oregon State went and that is probably why I can't remember that season much.

We got bent over a barrel by a 17-12 Oregon State team.....

Oregon St was hot…won their tournament and I think they made the elite 8 too. Not sure if they got healthy towards the end of the season or what. What a fever dream season with the Covid crap. Man it would have been sweet to have KJ and Springer at least 1 more season.

That team has the least chemistry of any Barnes team. No identify. We couldn’t figure out whether we should lean on the talented freshmen or the experienced upperclassmen.

That was the only Barnes team that resembled some of his later Texas teams…talented, but ultimately underachieving because of one and done freshmen who didn’t really create chemistry. Thought he’d flushed that model when he came to Tennessee. He sure flushed it after that season.

I was traveling a lot that year. Was that the post season that Fulkerson caught cheap shot vs Florida?

You are spot on. Jaden and Keon (both McDonalds All Americans) were out there playing their own game, like they had no teammates. If they tried to pass, it was an automatic turnover. If one of them went off for 30 we would win, otherwise we lost.

The next year Barnes brought in Kennedy Chandler, who was a different type of "one-and-done". Chandler was a true Point Guard who's primary instinct was to facilitate the other guys on the team. That team won the SEC Tournament... but still got bounced in the round of 32. That was a really good team that under-achieved in the tourney.

Too young. The best players weren’t leaders yet but they had to play em and the senior leaders weren’t the best players but there wasn’t another option. Just never put 5 on the court that were totally in sync.

Mad respect for fulky and everything he did. Wish we had keon and Jaden more than 1 year.

They got lucky because of that oola goola virus that was going around handicapping everyone.
Those beavt@rds hadn't done anything in the tournament in 35+ years, and the one year they decide they aren't going to suck arse happens to be the year we get them in our bracket.😏
They haven't even made the tournament since.
Well, except this year they snuck in.

I tell ya man, Tennessee is definitely due for a little tournament luck, and this year would be as good as any to cash in on it if you ask me!

Oregon State is not in this year’s tournament.

Yep. I was at that tournament game in Indianapolis. We drew a really bad matchup in Michigan and shot terribly.

Not having a healthy Fulkerson was a killer too

Michigan was on a heater at the end of the season. They had flopped a bit after being preseason top 5. Many of our fans only see that we lost to a lower seeded seeded team, therefore Barnes choked

I always thought it would have been to Kennedy's great benefit to spend another year with Barnes. Nothing he has done since has changed that thought, but if NIL was a thing then perhaps there might have been a chance of making it happen.

Looking at the contract he got and how little teams want to take a chance on him because of his size, I have thought he got the best return on investment that he could. He could have become an even better player with more years with Barnes, but nobody would pay him for it (NIL is not close to the pay he’s getting).

Oregon State is not in this year’s tournament.
Yeah, I got that from from a misleading title about them " heading out on the road for an NCAA tournament ".
Turns out they were talking about the new 'Crown Basketball Tournament'.
I forgot all about the Fox money grab tournament that starts this year.
Oregon state continues it's tradition of not being a good basketball program in April.
March Madness now has April Sadness to back it up.

Damn
What a horrible memory to bring back up.
Bad memory but not necessarily wrong to bring up this time a year. It's a good reminder to fans and players to take every team they play as a serious threat. In March, even if you are a high seed you are a few bad minutes of play from your season being ended by someone you are necessarily better than.

Of course, but a 1 year deal to return to Tennessee where he would have been tax free from state side of things would have been worthwhile. He signed a deal that guaranteed him 1.2m his first year. That woudl have been a no brainer to offer him to come back for one more year.
