Was looking at tourney brackets from this decade

Of course, but a 1 year deal to return to Tennessee where he would have been tax free from state side of things would have been worthwhile. He signed a deal that guaranteed him 1.2m his first year. That woudl have been a no brainer to offer him to come back for one more year.
He was signed by Memphis, so the state taxes would be the same, and he got the $1.7 million and $2.2 million for 2023 and 2024 on the same deal, which would have been unlikely if he had been drafted in 2023 after Ja Morant had burned his social capital. We haven't paid $1.2 million to a basketball player yet, and we can already see no other NBA team is willing to pay him the salary Memphis agreed to.

Even though he signed in Memphis, he would still be subject to jock taxes in other states on top of their state taxes. So even by signing in Memphis, he would have still been slammed.

And I don't care what has been paid previously... That is like saying if given the option to keep Knecht for another year, but the price was some high number.... The right players can make sense for a high number.

We've had other players who expected something in that range that we haven't sought to bid up. Lanier fortunately was fine with what we offered because he wanted to play here. Chandler may not have been, but what he did get he wouldn't have been offered by us. Certainly it wouldn't be close to the difference between $1.2 million and whatever he would have lost for 20 games of taxes.
