Washington AD calls Oregon "embarrassment" - CBSSports.com

Washington AD Scott Woodward called Oregon an “embarrassment” as an academic institution over the weekend.

Here are his quotes from the Washington pregame show.

“ … it’s not really where we want to be … because it’s an embarrassment what their academic institution is, and what’s happened to them as far as their state funding has gone. In my mind it’s a wonderful athletic facility but they’ve watched it at the expense of the university go really down.

“The athletic facility is impressive. The fans at Oregon should get down on their hands and knees at night to Phil Knight and pray to him because this is an incredible facility he’s built.“

Later …

“ … You watch how far they’ve [Oregon] dropped because of their state funding. And it’s a message for us too. Our state needs to get its act together because we can’t continue to progress without investment in our institution. But we’re doing extremely well and we’re very proud of that fact.”

Found a solid post from a Purdue graduate/fan.

Pretty ridiculous that he recognizes that academics have fallen because of a shortage in state funding but doesn't see that strong athletic performance is going to help bring more money into the university to make up for that lack. Guess what, Woodward - the Washington @ Oregon game had the largest attendance in Oregon history, and putting money - Phil Knight's money - back into athletics is going to create a larger draw and a larger flow of cash. Smart people turn money into more money, and that's exactly what Oregon has done. The academics will follow.

For what it's worth, the education system in Oregon is one of the least founded in the nation. Don't quite understand how you can place blame on the university itself, and it isn't as if it's a failure as an institution, it simply pales to USC, UCLA, Cal, Washington, etc. But to be fair, most schools do.

Dear Bumi,
Please take your hard on for Oregon somewhere else, thanks.

Let's not forget their uniforms and new basketball court. Those by themselves are enough to be called an embarrassment.

Yet, you are on a TN board.....make since to you?

Which part of my post professed my disdain for Tennessee, the Vols, or Vols fans?

Secondly, encase you missed it, this is the "Around the NCAA" sub section. Where, as Vol Admins described it, "In our Around the NCAA Forum you can discuss all NCAA sports including NCAA football, NCAA basketball, etc."

Complaining about this thread seems kind of silly now doesn't it?

I am complaining about you, to you. I do not hide behind the Admin.

he's right of course.
Yes, he is. Sadly, Oregon fans appear to be so ignorant that they can't see he's calling out the state legislature and trying to shame them into cutting loose more cash for U of O. No good deed goes unpunished.

This. UofO has long been the one all-around solid public academic institution this state has (others have good programs here and there, but one needs no more than a HS diploma and a social security number to get in).

The legislature here is in a financial clusterf*** though, schools such as PSU, where I attend, are turning to private investment, resulting in slashing of a number of degree programs and drastic raising of tuition over the next five years, even though it's doubtful the school will rise above its overall relatively poor rating.

that's more of an indictment than a compliment.
It is. The public education in this state has long been pretty poor. UofO is solid but it's liberal arts only, other than that there's OHSU which is an extremely good public health research university, and a handful of small, very selective, private schools, but nothing much other than that.

Southern Oregon U grad here. Outside of the program I was in, the only redeemable thing I could think of was this wonderful little breakfast joint across the street from the Admin building called Morning Glory.

Would have been nice to have working air conditioning in the summer too, but hey...

Typical Washington Elitism.

I will be the first to admit that UW has superior academics than UO but to argue that is because our "wonderful athletics" came "at the expense of the university" is just straight stupid. UO's Athletic Department is self sufficient and doesn't receive any funding from the UO general fund...

Also... I find it it incredible that a Pac-10 AD doesn't realize that having your school's football team go undefeated and ranked #1 in the country is in no way a bad thing for academics or the school in general. Applications go up when teams win. So do donations. So does revenue from ticket and merchandise sales. So does national exposure of the University.

Maybe UW's AD has forgotten all of this... it has been decades since UW has won much of anything... In the meantime if we need any help with tips on how to take a historic, national power of a program, drive it into the ground at full speed and make it a laughing stock of the Pacific NW... We'll be sure to give UW football a call... :eek:k:

I didn't take from that article he was bashing UO for spending on sports. He knows you have a cash cow in Knight.

He was calling out the state legislature of Oregon as a warning shot to his own state.

I am pretty sure most schools are jealous that you have a donor like Knight.

My favorite HS teacher played hoops at Southern back in the day. At least you picked the only okay town in southern part of the state. Medford, Grants Pass and especially K Falls are all miserable, drug-ridden piles of turd.
