It has started
I think it should be noted that Team USA had about 10 training sessions and then less than a week of practice after team selection and their first game in Latvia. Teaming up with guys he has spent all offseason and fall practice training with, practicing with, scrimmaging with, should return more consistent results, I'd hope.To be honest, watching him in the tournament has made me temper my expectations just a touch. Maybe that was my own fault too for being excitable about him. Couple things I noticed from the tournament though was that he struggled with bigger longer guards. Against Mali, they were well below team USA and Chandler on a skill level, but they were a big and long team. Chandler was lucky he didn’t have multiple turnovers that game. He had lots of his passes that were tipped and his teammates were just quicker to the loose ball than Mali. He would drive and get himself in trouble against them. Also, his shot, when open he’s going to knock it down, but his mechanics look like it will be difficult to get a good look off in the face of better defense. Of course with all that said, some of the guys in this tournament already had a year of college under their belt and Barnes will have time to work with him as well, but I will remember to be patient and not expect him to be a unstoppable day one.
Yes, absolutely. I was going to mention it, but didn’t actually know how much time they got to practice together. Glad they won and glad he’s getting to campus without any injuries after that fall he took.I think it should be noted that Team USA had about 10 training sessions and then less than a week of practice after team selection and their first game in Latvia. Good advice for all the 5 star freshman we get and hope to get in the future. The truth is very few freshman are Cade Cunningham or Jalen Suggs. Even Keon Johnson, who will be a top ten pick, seldom looked like the best player on the court while at UT. That is why I hope Barnes finds a sweet spot of recruiting highly ranked players that will likely be multi year guys and not one and dones. To be honest, watching him in the tournament has made me temper my expectations just a touch. I think we have the best point guard available. We don't need him to be the leading scorer. We will have scorers. He can get the ball where it needs to go, protect the ball and get it up the court, defend the opposing guards, and shoot a high percentage of his free throws. He will be the team leader we have needed for a long time.To be honest, watching him in the tournament has made me temper my expectations just a touch. I really good point guard who can distribute the ball inside gives those players a much easier shot from inside 10 feet. Our players should/are be able to hit at least 60-70 percent of those shots and players are in place to better rebound any missed shots. Unless a outside shooter hits 40% or more from the outside, one will score more points using the abilities of a good point guard.I’m curious, who are you talking about? I like our team this upcoming season a lot but I personally would say a bucket getting scorer is something the team definitely lacks. Hopefully/maybe BHH turns into that, I certainly hope so but a big if for a true freshman that just reclassified. I just hope by seasons end we have a solid offense unlike last years squad at years end
