Watching SC vs UConn

Why? Good Lord, the Lady Vols would be losing by 30 at halftime and we know how they are at 3rd quarters, so I'll say the eventual spread would be about 40 or 50! It would be a slaughter! The idea is pure nostalgia, but I don't want to see that in this day and age.

40 is viable simply because Geno would not let up if given the opportunity. I think it would probably be more in the 20-30 range but Geno would try his damnedest to push that.

Why can't Staley beat UCONN? Some Vol fans said "throw the checkbook at her" to get her to UT.

With all that talent, and fantastic fan support, Staley even has trouble defeating SEC teams.

He may be what he is but give the guy his due. His teams ONLY know how to play at 100%, ALL THE TIME. There is no slacking off, no matter what the score. All you need to know about his teams can be gained by watching how they scrable & dive for every loose ball when they are up by 40 & 1 minute to go. The LV's could use a dose of that.

Yup. Staley's teams are succeeding in a weakened SEC and struggle offensively, albeit to a lesser degree, like everyone else. To her credit though she's acknowledged it on multiple occasions and probably has something to do with the Gray amd Davis transfers.

Holly's team blew a 13 pt. 4th quarter lead at T A and M and I watched it all just get frittered away. Lady Vols will now be out of the top 25. Only reason they were still in the top 25 is due to reputation. 14-9? 5-5 in the SEC? Really? Can't close out a 13 pt 4th quarter lead?

When was the last time this once proud program was out of the top 25? Even when the team plays well Holly finds a way to choke it away. I'm sitting there watching that game and u just knew the meltdown was coming...and sure enough. Missing key late free throws..chucking up wild, flaling shots...no defense. Just a total and utter collapse. A microcosm of this pathetic, embarrassing season with not a lot of hope on the horizon with recruiting taking a major drop as well.

This program needs changes NOW or else this is gonna spiral out of control to the point the program may never come back and the glories of Lady Vol basketball become a distant afterthought. 14-9. Out of the top 25...blowing 13 pt 4th quarter leads when thier top 2 players had already fouled out. Inexcusable. Holly has destroyed this program.

I tried to tell Vol fans more than a decade ago that Geno was a far better coach than PS but nobody wanted to hear it. It was clear LONG ago that his teams played strong defense like we did--AND they were a MUCH BETTER and more efficient offensive team, and that if the PS didn't get the team's offensive act together we'd be eating UConn's dust for a long time. This was back when UConn had maybe 4 national titles and was gaining steam. No Vols fans listened as PS could do no wrong--even though the game passed her by and the Vols stumbled through almost every year, winning a lot of games but playing ugly basketball consistently, and it caught up with us. Well, UCONN became a juggernaut while--over the last decade--our offensive play has not only not improved it's gotten worse. In terms of coaching, we're like a high school team.

As for Staley, all she has proved is that she can recruit. She's not really much of a coach either. Recruiting is one thing, coaching quite another.

but not nearly enough if you can't coach. We are the poster program for good players suffering from crappy coaching.

If Pat was in her prime she'd still be going to Final Fours and periodically beating Luigi. Luigi became a better coach because of his desire to beat Pat.

I agree with you. They have size and is the main reason they have been undefeated. They could have easily lost 2 or three more games this year without some luck. I think that you can see the difference in UConn and UT with the preparation. They took away what USC did best all season.
We always make the other teams look like All Americans, and they make the other teams All Americans look like ordinary players.

Wilson's injury looks like a stress fracture to me. And since I have absolutely no training on this, take that for what it is worth. Nothing.

According to one So Car fan who wrote on the boneyard, she has been suffering from shin splints a good part of the season. I don't know to what extent that is different from a stress fracture but it seems that your observation is close to being accurate.

The same type injury Diamond started the year with, if I remember correctly?

Isn't it funny to you how every time UConn has to play a tougher opponent. that team is missing or has their best player injured?

I still say that Gee no signed a deal with Satan...... :)

Off the mark here Sandvol. That may have been true in '95, somewhat, but I think what drives him is his desire to be perfect on the floor. I've watched enough espn snippets of his practices & interviews with former players to come away with the impression that he has that type of personality that isn't satisfied with anything except perfection. Winning is not enough for this guy.

Maybe that not such a bad thing in a coach. What do you think?

What I noticed was the outstanding spacing, movement, crisp smart passing, and overall effort employed by UConn. They have a very high basketball IQ, something the Lady Vols lack.

A prime example of this was when SC was down 17 and passed up two wide open threes to throw it inside to a girl who was triple teamed. There is no doubt that the SEC plays an inferior brand of the game which is more akin to rugby than basketball.

The SEC office should also fire every single referee and start from scratch. There isn't a one of them worth a plugged nickle.

This goes to show you the effect of Pat Summitt. It is a winning philosophy when it's NOT FORCED.

UCONN's offense is spread the floor. Very Spread, guard oriented, cutting, flashing, forwards screening. Where as almost all the SEC's offense is interior oriented. Guards stand outside the 3 line, pass/dribble around, triangle high-low action. The problem is Geno has seen this offense his WHOLE coaching career and knows how to defend this.

If you look back on the teams who beat UCONN in the last 10 years, (ND-Tenn-Staford) the teams had 5 things going for them. They had a point guard who led the team, they had a power forward that could put the ball on the floor and score/pass, the team hit outside shots, they had a legit star, (Diggins, Oguimeke, Parker) and lastly the team played every possession 100% and fought hard/smart offense. It's a winning combination.

The name of his book is - "In Pursuit of Perfection." A good read that gives you an insight on his approach to coaching. I know in practice that he will have players working on a simple drill over and over and over again until they get it right.

There is a Sue Bird story of how after winning a NC the team gathered in Auriemma's room to celebrate. They put the game tape on and Auriemma started critiquing their play eveb though they had just won the NC. IIRC Sue Bird told him to STFU.

You are also right about winning not being enough. Actually, I think that winning might mean less to him than how his team plays the game. There are exceptions to that when it comes to certain teams or games though. :wink2:

I think his offense changes every year based on who his five best players are. He builds an offense to play to the strengths of those five rather than force those five to play into a predetermined system. If you watched the game last night, you saw that he doesn't have a center. He starts three guards and two forwards, but all five looked very quick and would switch on screens. Even without a center, those five defended all of South Carolina's bigs and even outrebounded South Carolina. I don't think a game plan of pound the ball into the post works well against UConn. At least it didn't last night.

"DON'T QUICK SHOOT" Loved watching Maryland and Ohio. Running and Gunning! They were both shooting within 4 or 5 seconds after a defensive rebound. 94 to 86. Could you imagine Holly presseres after coaching one of these teams? "I dont know why we scored 94 points.... we just kept quick shooting and not setting up the ball to get the ball inside!" Not enough dribbling and passing?

Baylor and Texas also play this type of game!

"WHY WE HAVE NO RECRUITS"????? Our wish list: Lauren Cox (Baylor) Joyner Holmes (Texas) Destiny Slocum (Maryland) Tori McCoy, Kiara Lewis, Jensen Caretti (Ohio) These teams play the type of game that is fun and is how you win in today's game!

We do not shoot until the shot clock is almost out or play hot potatoe with the ball and whoever has it last will throw up a shot! I don't think the shot clock between Maryland and Ohio ever got below 10 seconds?

We have the athletes to play this type of game but the coaches will not let them pressure and QUICK SHOOT. No one will play at Tennessee when they have so many other choices. Unless we change our philosophy or coaching styles?

Maybe we can get the girls that Ohio is going to have to run off??

Really liked what I saw from Ohio State last night. Man Kelsey Mitchell just pushes, pushes, pushes.

I know South Carolina beat them in the first couple games of the season but I think they would beat them now. 1 seeds look to me like UConn, ND, Ohio State and Baylor.
