Way Forward For Democrats

Here’s a list of proposal from Vox cofounder Matt Yglesias for the DNC moving forward:

1. Economic self interest for the working class includes robust economic growth

2. Climate change is a reality to manage not a hard limit to obey

3. The government should prioritize the interest of normal people over those who engage in antisocial conduct

4. We should, in fact judge people by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin

5. While race is a social construct, biological sex is not

6. Academic and nonprofit staffers do not occupy a unique position of virtue relative to private sector employees

7. Politeness is a virtue but excessive language policing alienates normal people

8. We are equal in the eyes of God, but the American government can and should prioritize the interest of American citizens

9. Public services must be run in the interest of their users, not their providers.
Great post.

I think number 1 is true for both parties, but the democrats failed at messaging an actual plan to do it.

The bolded, IMO, is what turned off the moderate voter and was responsible for the gains Trump had in this election. The left just went way too far looney with that stuff. Distancing from the nutjobs on those and making some common sense statements would have gone a long way. It was never going to cause the wingnuts on the left to stay home this election and would have been more appealing to the middle.

When it comes to number 1, I think the problem is that left wing messaging often seems to treat economic growth as a negative “the rich are just getting richer!” and the implied message seems to be that they are open to economic stagnation or worse as long as the disparities are evened out.

In contrast the right wing view is more so that economic growth is a tide that raises all boats.

The Democrats lost this election even they touted economic success while the average American is struggling to make ends meet.

Couple that with open border policies, support of trans women competing against their daughters, lax on crime policies and you lose the center.

The way forward is easy, meet Americans where they are. Drop the blanket public support of everything LGBTQ, responsible administration of the border, common sense outlook on/against crime.

Use common sense, support LGBTQ rights, which are the same as everyone else's, enforce laws with respect to the border and immigration etc.

The liberal white women who make up the core driving force in the democrat party have already committed the party to a now unalterable “way forward” unfortunately

I think once Trump is out of the picture we will begin to see Republicans with more gains in the Female voting demographic.

Makes multiple references to “normal people”.

They are not gonna like that lol.

The problem the democrats have is that they have accepted, and even nurtured, the crazy wing of their party so long that any attempt to reign them in and return to common sense progressive positions would inevitably break the party. The fringe has become the base and any attempt to cut out the tumor will kill the patient.

They have no choice.

Same can be said of the GOP once Trump is out of the picture.

Yep, way too much alienation of the average person in an effort to incarcerated transgender illegal aliens or attempting to coddle emotional unstable youth who believe climate change has somehow ruined their youth

Move away from the radical side of their party and return to basic “old ways” democrat beliefs. Minus the slavery and bigotry.

The problem with that argument is that Trump’s policies are very centrist. What’s his most extreme policy?

I don't think he has "policies" as much as he has "goals."

Reducing illegal immigration, reducing inflation, reducing international tensions, lowering taxes, those are all goals. They are vague aspirations which of course everyone can get behind.

The policy part is much more difficult, and is real and not just a pronouncement or a promise of how things will eventually become. Its where he fell short last time and its where all politicians almost always end up on the trash heap -- promising something which in reality is largely out of your control and very difficult to deliver.

From the marxist democrat polling (Blueprint) on why American voted for Trump:

The results paint a clear picture: Democrats were punished for inflation, misalignment on immigration and cultural issues, and Biden. The top three reasons not to vote for Harris were:
  1. “Inflation was too high under the Biden-Harris Administration” (+24)
  2. “Too many immigrants illegally crossed the border under the Biden-Harris Administration” (+23)
  3. “Kamala Harris is focused more on cultural issues like transgender issues rather than helping the middle class” (+17).
Good to see #3 being an issue on why Trump was so successful as this issue was scoffed at by many pre-election.

I’d argument the legislation he implemented and the stances he takes are very centrists. Is there a single issue you can point to that you believe he’s radical on?

For example with Kamala I’d point to tax payer funded gender reassignment surgeries for incarcerated illegal immigrants as an extreme position

Dang, son. Here we are talking vague generalities and you bring the heavy backhand of the most specific highly charged radical issue straight to the jaw.

You are more of a blackjack guy than a Texas Hold 'em guy, aren't you?

removing the closed primaries would do a lot to help with this.
That would help some, but for a better solution long term (bad short term for them), they need to cut loose from the crazies. Do all they can to appeal to moderates to try to make up for some of the loss, and maybe you get Latinos and black men back too.

I would rather each party be upfront and honest about what/who they represent. I don't want the wolf in sheeps clothing types getting through.

I don't want them hiding their tax-on-unrealized-gains mindset behind a pay-a-fair-share facade.

They may also want to stop listening to XM shows like Dean Obeidallah and Maddow on MSNBC.

Currently, they’re blaming the election loss on the MSM not being on their side and failing to get the democrats message out to voters. In addition, it’s because America is racist and sexist and will not elect a black woman as president.

And what about the call for unity? None here. They’re doubling down on everything from ‘20-‘24.
