I like how you answered the question and then thought up hypothetical questions that I might have asked and answered those too... LOL Very thorough though and I appreciate that. The question that you didn't answer was if the SEC chooses these permanent match ups how long do they exist for or how long have they existed for specifically for the SEC? I'm assuming when TAMU entered the conference they had to make some soft of a change right?
I wonder just because your post seems to indicate that the conference doesn't.... or you believe that the conference doesn't match these teams based on how strong they are or their rankings. Which is why I asked if there is some sort of lottery or point system they used to get these match ups. If you could provide a link to the information that would be useful so we can avoid a lengthy conversation in this thread.
The SEC men's and women's basketball coaches have meetings every year (late spring) where they decide on things like scheduling etc. They either decide to change things or keep things the same, usually deciding on the latter. Our scheduling format could really change on a whim, there's a soft date of how long we're going to keep it this way (I'm not sure of it, you'd have to research it) but nothing definite because it could change whenever. There have been talks ever since we went to 16 of going up to 18 conference games, which means you would play 5 conference opponents twice and the other 8 opponents once (two permanent opponents and three rotational opponents perhaps). I'm actually in favor of this.
The last time we changed our scheduling format was in 2012 when Mizzou and A&M were added. As far as permanent rivals, the SEC tried to match opponents up with regional counterpart rivalries.. which is why you see permanent rivalries like Tennessee/Vanderbilt, Georgia/Auburn, LSU/A&M, Arkansas/Missouri.. some, like South Carolina/Kentucky don't seem like they make sense, but in the sport of women's basketball those two schools are DEFINITELY rivals. South Carolina vs. Kentucky is way more intense than South Carolina vs. Tennessee. Ask any WBB fan of either school the one school they dislike the most and they'll no doubt respond with the other school OR Tennessee. Lol.
But I can tell you as a South Carolina fan.. if you polled SC WBB fans on who they would want to beat more Tennessee or Kentucky.. somewhere between 70% and 80% (or more perhaps) would choose Kentucky.
