WCWS - TN Plays Tonight

I know this team isn't better than the last team that went to the WCWS but if we get a bases loaded with no outs and all we have to do is score one run and win I hope this team can get that one run.
This team isn't better? This team is much better than the other teams who made it to Oklahoma City.

I think Washington would be a very tough matchup for UT. With the scoring struggles that the Lady Vols have had this season (until recently) they'll be hard pressed to score runs against Daniell Laurie.

Think Monica Abbott, but better and you've got UW's pitcher.

The '07 team would kill this one. That said, what this team has done is quite impressive.

That was the only time I've actually took the time to watch an entire softball game. Was pissed.

Wrong...

The 2007 squad rode the arm of Monica Abbott and was, with the exception of Schutzler and Callahan, very offensively challenged. The 2010 squad is much more balanced up and down the line-up and is the fastest team top to bottom in the World Series. If Renfroe and Hosfield can hold their own, this is the type of team that can bring home the trophy.

Considering that the Lady Vols bring in the nation's #1 recruiting class in the fall, this team will be scary good for the next several years.

Good job with the prognosticating.:birgits_giggle:

Ya well the pitcher went into the game with a era of 1.0, and had just snagged her second straight National Player of the Year award, but the performance last night was pretty poor.

So how does this work? Is it down to 4 teams now? I guess we play tonight at 9:30 on espn.

Double elimination, meaning you have to lose 2 games to be eliminated. Everyone is still in, but 4 teams are now 1 loss away from being out.

When 2 teams are left, they will play a best-of-3 series to determine the national champion.

Tonight's game is huge to stay in the winner's bracket. If we can win tonight, we're guaranteed to be in the final four teams and would play on Sunday (either one game or two). With a win in either game on Sunday, we'd be on to the finals.

Which I think is dumb.

I'd prefer a straight double elimination over the 2 bracket format they use now. It would at least reward the team that goes through undefeated. Instead, if one team goes undefeated but the other one has a loss, it doesn't matter since either team has to lose 2 more games to be put out.

Alas, we must play what we've been dealt by the 'AA.

Yeah. That '07 team put Arizona in the losers bracket, then beat them again in game one only to lose two straight.

7:00 (ET) on ESPN2. and playing Arizona once again in the first round. So ..... my prediction for the LVs record in the WCWS this year is :

0-2 75%
1-2 20%
2-2 5%

As usual, I hope for better results, but realistically, I don't see much of a chance for any success.

What do you think?

Wow, confidence is not exactly your strong point, is it? :)

Even before last night, I would have vehemently disagreed with you. I saw both pitch live (including all three games at the Super Regional last weekend since the games were a mile from where I live) and I would pick Abbott without a moment's hesitation.

However, Lawrie is really, really good and definitely the best pitcher in the country right now. She is also a battler and I would not be shocked if they won twice on Saturday and then kept going from there.

Which I think is dumb.

It may not be the best system (2-of-3 to decide the national champion), but it is way, way better than it used to be (same format, but a single championship game, also ignoring how you did previously in the WCWS). Also, the current format allows you to have a showcase type of setup that ESPN can promote (three-game series is easier to sell to the general public than this will be one game if one team wins, but two if the other wins, which could confuse/turn off people). I really like the current system. And it's exactly the same as regionals and super regionals - it's just that these two rounds are at the same site - Oklahoma City.
