For those out there saying we showed no mercy..per sources Tennessee at halftime offered Kent State an opportunity to shorten the playing time in the 2nd half or implement a running clock; they declined. I suppose in many cases a team would refuse such an offer out of pride, can’t blame them too much for that. I’m not certain if it would have affected their payout, but at any rate I think it’s noteworthy that they did go on to suffer multiple injuries in the second half.

They also mentioned it during the broadcast coming out of the halftime break.

I didn’t actually catch that during the broadcast, but thanks for the follow up. 👍
Well, I’m glad you found the article, too! I don’t think a lot of people were still watching in a “dialed in” kind of way by that point. Ha!
My kids love watching, and they forbid switching channels at any point when the Vols play, so we were cheering like it was still the first quarter when Navy Shuler was in. We had it on till they all fell asleep and then flipped to UGA/KY.

Oh I was tuned in til the very end, but I must’ve been on a fridge raid when they mentioned that. 😎🍕🥪🍗

and it is on to Penn State for Kent where their blood loss will continue. I am not a big fan of Q4 payday games but sometimes they work out with the underdog get the $ and the W. Still shaking my head over NUI taking down ND and now Toledo beats Miss State.

not surprised. a bad coach doing stupid things. They should have pulled a Kiffin and not let him on the bus home.

We stopped the bleeding in the seconf half. We only scored 6 points in the second half….nobody in their right might stops trying to score in the first half. We did start playing reserves in the second quarter but our second string guys had to play like it was 0-0 or they will become third stringers - that’s just the nature of competitive sports. Third quarter we played plenty of freshmen who need game experience and by the fourth quarter we emptied the benches.

There will be a lot more pep in the step of all those you guys who got to play yesterday. They work hard in practice and it’s great that this team has that killer instinct and puts away these scrimmage games early so everyone else can play. I still remember when we played down to our opponents level and would have to play starters into the fourth quarter because it was a close game.

Tennessee called off the dogs as much as they ever have under Josh Heupel in the second half. The Vols went straight to third string quarterback Jake Merklinger to open the half and also played quarterbacks Navy Shuler and Ryan Damron. Vols huddled in the second half and only had three total drives thanks to a drive that last 6:59 and another that lasted 7:26.

Gump would had Garrentino playing in the 4th qrt trying to keep Kent from mounting a comeback

Kent State had a lot of stops at the LOS in the 4th quarter, and displayed some excitement over them.

I think, with the long rebuild ahead of them, they would say the extra time was worth it. Now, as for what the injured would say... ?

They should have started it at the end of the first quarter!

Bear Bryant never pulled the dogs off I mean that’s how I recall it because other teams be trying to impress polls not to mention as one sports announcer stated one time you can’t let your 234 stringers in not let them play to improve.May need their talent down the road sooner than later.

I’ve heard people say we went for “style points” this game, but they obviously didn’t pay much attention to anything but the overall score.
Exactly! “Style points” would’ve been dropping 120 points and 1,000+ yds of offense on a severely overmatched, glorified D2 squad.
Heupel did exactly what he needed to do in such a scenario.
