We ran off a coach who never had a loss like this one

Im extremely confused about the main point of this post

1. Why did it need to exist?
2. Tennessee literally got worse every single year of Battle's tenure. Started out 11-1 and it was downhill every year until fired after 6-5. He lost everything Doug Dickey had built.
3. Getting boat raced is just one form of losing but all losing counts.
4. Fans are fans whether social media exists or not. The job got done (firing) and the fans I'm sure were pleased they got their way.

Bill Battle. He was gone after a 6-5 season. We never got boat raced his entire career, which was better than anyone save Neyland, Dickey, Majors and Fulmer. Not including Heupel, he was better than everyone else. We have always had a tough fan base. Thank God social media wasn't available back then
I'm not going back to 4 and 5 win seasons. Multiple 10 win seasons beating Alabama 2 out of last 3. Crazy

I wasn’t around for Battle but my understanding is that there was an unmistakable downward trajectory under his watch, primarily with talent. He earned what he got.
All ya gotta do is check the history. He started out strong, then went continually downhill from there. Job was too big for him. If I remember correctly, he was a tight ends coach under Bear when Tennessee hired him.

Hopefully, if Tennessee has to hire a new coach in the future, they will stay away from the campus at Alabama to find a new coach. That has never worked out well for Tennessee.

That was all the way back in 1970s. Different time. Tennessee was a bigger program back then (more like how Georgia or LSU are today). Tennessee just isn't what it once was and probably never will be.

Neyland died a long time ago and Tennessee has struggled to be competitive in the modern era of CFB.

. Battle never had one, but lost to North Texas St., which is similar to losing to Northern Illinois.........
I was sitting in the upper deck when we punted and I saw a hole my grandmother could roll a wheel chair through and said oh #!&! and set down as I knew he would return it and we would loose.

Battle was a nice guy but he for the most part recruited soft players and he could not coach

The two are not even comparable. Bill Battle inherited an already strong program in an era were Tennessee was seen as a more prestigious program and had less competition.

Heupel basically inherited Nebraska 2.0, a team with history but hadn't done jack in a long time, and has made Tennessee somewhat relevant again.

Flame if you want, but if this post is trying to put CJH in the same mold as the former Alabama AD, then we have some truly idiotic fans. We accomplished something that 90% of FBS teams did not. We made the playoffs. Some people complain when they are called fair weather fans for the stupid things they say, but only being a fan of a team when they win is the absolute definition of a bandwagon/fair weather fan. It is OK to be upset your team has lost, even when it ranks as a blowout. But wanting the coaches fired and/or the players bench or kicked off the team is the epitome of that class of "fans". If you don't think that is happening, read the posts here and on other social media sites. ABSOLUTELY PATHETIC!!!!!!!!!!!

Bill Battle was a good man. I got to meet him when I was at the Bill Battle sports camp when I was 13 years old. He made us all feel like we mattered. Great experience

Bill was a super gentleman and looked like a coach. However, heTook an SEC champ program and ran it straight into the ground. Would have won 0 or 1 games in 1977 if retained while Majors won 4. Majors would have been a popular successor to Dickey with head coaching experience but Woodruff promoted 28 year old Vol TE Coach Bill who never coached another day after leaving Tennessee. Crazy situation and Woodruff who made a brilliant hire with Dickey - made the ultimate “reach” hire with Battle and much dysfunction followed until Johnny, Phil and the boys turned it back around. Then Hamilton did his thing and the Vols tanked again. Anyway losing a championship playoff game while embarrassing and disappointing- is a different world from the train wreck mid-level OVC program that was turned over to NCAA National Coach of the Year Johnny “Drum” Majors in 1977. From first to worst- fans did not enjoy watching that transpire. Josh Heupel is one of the top 5 coaches in Vol history regardless of the game vs. Ohio State. Josh could rise to second - we will see.

Firing Heupel would be dumb unless you have a coach in mind thats bringing a staff that has NFL and college experience with them. I DO NOT WANT TO SEE ANYMORE DOOLEY< PRUITT<JONES experiments. So keep what we have unless you have a rock solid plan in place. Thats where im at.

This is no knock on the young Vols TE coach who is 29 years old and has commensurate coaching experience to Bill Battle when hired to be head coach. If Josh suddenly went to Oklahoma in the depth of the night - what would you think of promoting this young man to head coach?

Bill Battle never coached another day after leaving Tennessee at age 35. Butch, Kiffin, Dooley, and Pruitt (after serving his sentence) all remained in the game for better or worse. When discussing men who made or make careers as football coaches, Mr. Battle can be omitted from serious discussion. It was not his fault- the AD went temporarily insane.

Bernard is trying to stir up the old timers which is fun to bond us around Josh by comparing him to Battle.

It wasn't intended to put Battle in the same mold with Heupel. It served its purpose

Call me when Heupel loses to North Texas State in Neyland Stadium.

FWIW Heupel has 2 10+ win seasons in 4 years. Battle had 2 total, Majors had 2 total in their time here.
Battle had 3 10+ win seasons. His first 3 seasons were 11-1, 10-2 and 10-2.

Also, Battle and Majors also coached in an era when there were only 11 regular season games, no conference championship game and ties were a thing (Majors had 6 seasons with at least one tie and 2 seasons with 2). To win 10 games, you could only lose (or tie) 2.

Just like the NFL and MLB, hard to compare eras with all The additional games added over the years.
