We ran off a coach who never had a loss like this one

Bill Battle. He was gone after a 6-5 season. We never got boat raced his entire career, which was better than anyone save Neyland, Dickey, Majors and Fulmer. Not including Heupel, he was better than everyone else. We have always had a tough fan base. Thank God social media wasn't available back then

Tell me you're old without telling me you're old

How do you define “boat race” then? 25 point loss is but 23/22/21 point loss isn’t? Battle got thumped regularly by Bama his last few years with a couple of more 3 score losses thrown in along the way:

1973 Bama 42 TN 21

1974 Bama 28 TN 6, Auburn 21 TN 0

1975 Bama 30 TN 6, Ole Miss 23 TN 6

Not like BB was an unlucky victim in a bunch of one score games. Along with losing to North Texas, he lost to Vandy, Kentucky & Duke as the team did a slide across his tenure in going from 11-1 to 6-5 and ultimately to 4-7 Majors first year after he finished is “unbuilding job”. Nice guy but nothing “irrational” about cutting him loose.

Also lost to Ole Miss 23-6 in 1975.

25 points is “boat raced” but 23, 22, 21 isn’t? Especially given the offenses of the era, those all pretty much felt like “non-competitive beatdowns” at the time they were administered.
You make some good points there. That was indicative of not getting quality depth on the recruiting trail. We lost a lot of those games in the second half. My point is that he didn't get proper direction from above.

Social media has one more damage to the human race than almost anything.

It was kind of hard to get boat raced during the 3 yards and a cloud of dust era when the forward pass was a novel approach for offenses. But Archie did it 38-0 to DAD in Jackson, MS.

I wasn’t around for Battle but my understanding is that there was an unmistakable downward trajectory under his watch, primarily with talent. He earned what he got.
Yes, it took Johnny majors several years just to dig out of the hole to any sort of respectability. Battle to the elite program down to mediocrity, and his recruiting was the red flag that showed things were going to get much worse. We were so good when he took over, that he beat his own mentor, Bear Bryant his first year on the job has a 28 year old man! Unfortunately, the lack of ability to recruit at that level brought about his Waterloo. It was very nasty, and there were reports that a moving truck was parked in front of his house one morning. It became so ugly, that my late mother actually quit being a fan because of the vitriol that came down on what is universally known as a quality Christian man outside of the head coaching responsibilities.
